BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.—The Southeastern University men’s soccer team was on the road again as Hurricane Dorian forced the Fire to play away from campus for the fourth straight match.
Despite conceding a goal in the 23rd minute, fifth-year senior Jake Van Der Luit dialed in a late second half penalty kick and a goal in the second overtime period to give the Fire a 2-1 victory over Montreat.
The Fire had been outshot 6-3 prior to the Montreat goal. The Cavaliers came out with a strong attack and pushed the ball to the attacking third of the field frequently.
A Cavalier foul in the 85th minute put Van Der Luit at the spot where he went far post to put his team on the board.
In overtime, the early tempo caught up as the Fire had every shot in the extra sessions, including Van Der Luit’s game winner that came just 17 seconds into the second overtime.
Van Der Luit has four goals, and has scored in each of his team’s last three games.
The Fire will be on the road once again next Thursday to take on Talladega.
