Lakeland, Fla.— In their home opener, the No. 25 Southeastern University men’s soccer team edged NCAA DII St. Leo in double overtime with a score of 1-0 in an exhibition. Senior Jake Van Der Luit scored the lone goal of the match in the 103rd minute of play that sent Fire fans home happy.

With under seven minutes to play in the second overtime, Van Der Luit saw an opportunity to win the game and capitalized. “I saw a chance to shoot and just tried to hit it as hard as I could and got the lucky bounce off the crossbar,” Van Der Luit stated when asked about the game winning goal.

SEU head coach Clay Roberts was pleased with how his team executed in their home opener commenting, “We came out as a collective group and executed our game plan to the T… A goal we set in the preseason was to not drop a game at home no matter what the tagline next to it was.”

Southeastern and Saint Leo kept pace with each other offensively throughout the match as they were tied with nine total shots a piece at the end of regulation. However, the Fire out-shot Saint Leo 4-3 in the overtime periods.

Goalies Carlos Curado, Bryce Mitchell, and Logan Whitney combined to shut out the Lions Mitchell and Whitley were especially clutch as they both had two saves.

Coming up, the Fire head on the road for a match-up with Talladega College on September 12th before coming back home to play Brewton-Parker College on September 14.
