Viterbo tops Goshen in defensive struggle

Early runs fall short of V-Hawks’ hot fourth quarter

GOSHEN, Ind. — Graysen Cockerham scored 16 points for the second straight game and TaNiece Chapman added 10 Friday night as the Goshen College women’s basketball team dropped a 69-58 decision to Viterbo University in Gunden Gymnasium.

The Maple Leafs (5-2) came out hot, scoring 11 of the first 13 points in less than four minutes in the first quarter. Viterbo responded with an 11-2 run of its own to knot things at 13 before Goshen led 20-17 at the quarter.

GC shot 43.3 percent (7-for-15) from the floor in the second quarter, getting 8 points from Cockerham to take a 37-28 lead into halftime, and used a 9-2 run to stretch the margin back to 54-44 after three quarters.

The V-Hawks got 7 points apiece from Ambree Schlosser and Madison Doerr in the fourth quarter, when the visitors shot 9-for-13 (69.2 percent) to finish off the win. Alyssa Nilssen led all players with 7 rebounds in the last 10 minutes and 15 for the game.

Nilssen paced Viterbo with 16 points, leading a quartet of players in double figures. Doerr and Madessa Collins scored 12 each. Viterbo shot 24-for-53 (45.3 percent) from the floor and posted 16 assists.

Haley Archibeque recorded 5 assists for the Maple Leafs, upping a season average that had already been in the top 35 in the nation entering the game. Chapman led Goshen with 8 rebounds and Sydney Stein had 7.

A pair of active defenses combined to force 50 turnovers in the game: Cockerham had 5 steaks and Collins 4 to lead the respective teams.

Up Next: Goshen has less than 24 hours off before returning to the floor Saturday afternoon to meet Ohio Christian at 5 p.m. The game follows the Maple Leaf men’s contest as Goshen faces IU Northwest at 3.
