Waters Announces Resignation as Head Track and Field Coach at Taylor

UPLAND, Ind. – Rod Waters officially announced on Monday that he would resign his position as the head coach of the Taylor men’s and women’s track and field programs. Waters is in the midst of his second season at the helm for the Taylor track teams.

“Rod has been a great coach, a strong mentor and a valued member of our Athletics Department,” said TU athletics director Kyle Gould. “While we hate to see him go, we know that he is following his calling and we wish him and his family nothing but the best.”

Despite stepping down from his head coaching position following the conclusion of the indoor seasons, Waters will remain on staff as an assistant coach for the TU sprinters and hurdlers during the outdoor campaign.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to lead and to be a part of such a storied track and field program at Taylor, and I will be forever grateful for the opportunity,” stated Waters. “While I am stepping down from my head coaching duties, I look forward to my new role as an assistant coach for the sprints and hurdles events.”

During his two indoor seasons and one outdoor campaign with the track and field teams, Waters saw his Trojan student-athletes rack up 26 NAIA All-American honors and turn in 15 record-setting performances for the Taylor program. The successful stint ended on a high note, with Josh Roth’s NAIA National Championship run in the 3,000-meters on Saturday.

Waters also guided the Taylor women to the 2018 Crossroads League Indoor Championship, led his squads to five top-three finishes in a combined six league championship meets, including the one title and three second-place showings. The strong team showings carried over to NAIA Nationals as well, with the Purple and Gold finishing inside the Top-25 at the National Championships in two of his three women’s seasons, as well as two-of-three on the men’s side.

The Taylor programs will be in good hands heading into the outdoor season, with Quinn White set to lead the teams as the interim head coach.

“Taylor track and field has an outstanding legacy due to past athletes and coaches and it is a privilege to take the baton from Coach Waters and lead these student-athletes for the spring,” said White. “I am honored to work with a fantastic coaching staff as we guide these great young men and women. Collectively, we are excited to carry on the tradition of TU track and field.”

White has served as an assistant coach for the TU track program over the past 10 years, while also leading the women’s cross country team for the past 10 years and the men’s cross country squad for one.

A national search for the next head coach of Taylor’s track and field programs will begin later this spring.
