Wisconsin settles for split at Notre Dame
Dhooghe and Ahcan score goals in 5-2 loss
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Wisconsin drops game two of their weekend series with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Saturday night at the Compton Family Ice Arena, 5-2.
Sean Dhooghe and Roman Ahcan put up goals for Wisconsin in the second and third period respectively, but it wasn’t enough to hold off the Irish offense, putting up five goals including three in the second period.
The first period finished scoreless in South Bend with great performances from both goaltenders in between the pipes. Senior goalie Jack Berry put up 32 saves on the night for Wisconsin.
Ahcan’s shorthanded goal early in the third brought the Badger’s within one of Notre Dame, but a power-play goal from the Irish, followed by an empty-netter held off the Badger comeback and sealed a win for the home team.
Junior Captain Wyatt Kalynuk dished out an assist on each of the two goals tonight bringing him up to 20 total points on the season.
Notes to know:
- Kalynuk has scored in three of the four meetings with Notre Dame this season with tonight’s game being his second consecutive multi-point game
- Ahcan’s goal marks his fifth over the past six games, all in the new year
Straight from the rink:
Head Coach Tony Granato:
“I loved how we competed. I did. I’ve got nothing wrong with how we competed. I thought there was something different in our room, that there was something different in our guys’ eyes and how they approached this weekend. I thought there was some great battle out there for the most part from everybody in the lineup. This is a step where I think we grew as a team on some of the things we have maybe lacked.”
Up Next: Wisconsin returns home next weekend to take on the Minnesota Gophers in a Border Battle at the Kohl Center. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. Friday and 8 p.m. Saturday with a broadcast available on Fox Sports Wisconsin and Fox Sports Wisconsin + on respective nights.
