PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.— After a phenomenal opening round yesterday, the Fire women’s golf team did just enough to guarantee themselves a spot in the final two rounds of competition at the 2018 NAIA National Championship.
Southeastern began the day on the back nine, the toughest portion of the course. Despite higher scores than usual, Valentina Espinosa recorded a birdie on 11, going one-under through the first four holes. The freshman made the turn with a team-best score of 39 (+3), while Ana Uribe and Brooke Wetzel shot 40 (+4) through nine.
Uribe led the squad down the stretch, registering a team-high five pars and shooting a 41 over the last nine holes. She logged the lowest score of the day (81), followed closely by Espinosa (82). Wetzel and Sarah Noto completed the afternoon with an 84 and an 85, respectively.
Though the Fire failed to record a birdie over the final nine holes of play, Southeastern headed into the clubhouse in the top 17. SEU finished with a combined 644 (+68) through 36, which tied for 16th position at the time of finish and ensured the team’s participation in two additional rounds.
The Fire will await the official end of the second round to find out when they tee off in tomorrow’s third round. Follow @SEUFireGolf on Twitter for more updates.
