Valpo U Soccer Falls at Illinois Sunday

 

A perfect Illinois side proved too much for Valpo to handle on Sunday afternoon in Champaign, Ill., as the Beacons fell 6-0 to the Fighting Illini.

 

How It Happened

–          Illinois struck 48 seconds into the match to open the scoring.

–          The Fighting Illini added goals in the 19th minute, the 34th minute and the 42nd minute to go into halftime with a 4-0 lead.

–          Illinois found the back of the net twice in the opening 11 minutes of the second half for the final margin.

–          Saki Tsuchiya (Takasaki, Japan/Kaishi Gakuen [Tyler J.C.]) laid out to her left to save a penalty kick in the 84th minute to keep the Fighting Illini from adding to their lead.

 

Inside the Match

–          Tsuchiya made her Beacon debut on Sunday afternoon, stepping into goal at the start of the second half and making five saves — highlighted by the aforementioned penalty stop.

–          Kate Sheridan (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) made three saves in goal in the first half, including a pair of highlight-reel stops.

–          Illinois finished the match with a 19-6 advantage in shots, including a 14-4 edge in shots on goal.

 

Next Up

Valpo (2-4-1) faces its final weekend of nonconference play next weekend, starting with a Thursday evening match at Western Illinois at 5 p.m.
