Painter Signs Contract Extension Through 2023-24 Season
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University and head men’s basketball coach Matt Painter have agreed on a two-year contract extension through the 2023-24 season.
In addition, effective July 1, 2019, Painter’s contract will convert to a rolling five-year term via automatic one-year extensions that could extend the agreement beyond 2023-24.
“Matt Painter is a proven winner, and he wins with integrity,” Purdue vice president and director of intercollegiate athletics Mike Bobinski said. “He has built a program that makes Boilermaker fans proud and embodies the very best of college athletics. Matt’s priorities and approach align perfectly with our values at Purdue and are evidenced by the success his players achieve on the court and in the classroom. We are excited for the future of Purdue men’s basketball under Matt’s continued leadership.”
Painter also will receive an increase to his 2018-19 compensation.

In 13 seasons at the Purdue helm, Painter has compiled a 295-149 record (.664 winning percentage) with 10 NCAA Tournament appearances, two Big Ten Conference championships and a Big Ten Tournament title. Painter enters the 2018-19 season ranked third on the Boilermakers’ all-time wins list behind College Basketball Hall of Famers Gene Keady (512) and Ward “Piggy” Lambert (371).
Painter is one of merely six coaches in Big Ten history to earn conference Coach of the Year honors at least three times, joining Keady, Bobby Knight, Bo Ryan, Tom Izzo and Thad Matta.
Over the last three seasons, Purdue has won 83 games, the ninth-most nationally, while boasting one of the nation’s top home records at 48-4. During that span, Purdue has been ranked in 56 of 57 Associated Press Top 25 polls, the fourth-highest total in the country.
The Boilermakers are one of six schools to advance to consecutive NCAA Tournament Sweet 16s, and Purdue’s 10 NCAA appearances over the last 12 seasons are the ninth-most nationally.
At age 48, Painter is the youngest coach in America to have taken his teams to at least 11 NCAA Tournaments (one appearance while at Southern Illinois).
Last season’s Purdue squad posted a 30-7 record, setting a school record for victories while rattling off a school-record and nation’s-best 19-game winning streak from November to February. The Boilermakers advanced to the Big Ten Tournament championship game for the third time and reached the Sweet 16 for the fourth time under Painter.
