Grace loses at top-ranked SAU

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The reigning NAIA champions proved to be too much for No. 21 Grace’s women’s soccer team on Wednesday.

The Lady Lancers fell 3-0 at No. 1 Spring Arbor, snapping a 10-game winning streak for Grace.

Spring Arbor was aggressive in the first half, resulting in a two-goal advantage. The Cougars (13-0-1, 7-0 Crossroads League) scored the go-ahead goal 11 minutes into the match.

SAU’s lead doubled before halftime as the Cougars scored on a penalty kick in the 31st minute.

The Lady Lancers (14-2, 6-1 CL) had two shots on goal before halftime, but attempts from Joana Schimmel and Sacia Hanson were both saved.

Grace was unable to puncture SAU’s lead in the second half as only one of the team’s shot attempts was on target. The Cougars added an insurance goal in the 67th minute for the game’s final tally.

Hanson had three shots for Grace, half of the team’s total. Two of her shots were on goal.

Bethany Blackwood made eight saves in 90 minutes as Grace’s goalkeeper.

The Lady Lancers travel to St. Francis on Saturday at 7 p.m. for the second-to-last regular season game.
