Fourteen Big Ten Soccer Students Named Academic All-District

Wisconsin had three selections, while Indiana, Iowa, Michigan and Penn State had two honorees

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Fourteen Big Ten Conference men’s and women’s soccer students earned Google Cloud Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), it was announced Thursday. Of those students selected, 10 are women’s soccer standouts, while the other four are men’s soccer honorees.

On the women’s side, six of the Big Ten’s 10 Academic All-District selections earned first-team honors, including Penn State’s Kerry Abello and Emily Ogle from District 2, Indiana’s Abby Allen from District 5, and a trio of students from District 6 — Iowa’s Hannah Drkulec and Kaleigh Haus, and Minnesota’s April Bockin.

Four other women’s soccer students received second-team Academic All-District recognition, all from District 5 — Indiana’s Maya Piper, Michigan’s Reilly Martin, Northwestern’s Kayla Sharples and Purdue’s Hannah Melchiorre.

Wisconsin had three of the Big Ten’s four men’s soccer Academic All-District selections, with Noah Leibold, Isaac Schlenker and Patrick Yim all garnering first-team accolades from District 6. They are joined by Michigan’s Ivo Cerda, who was a first-team choice from District 5.

The 10 Big Ten soccer standouts who earned first-team Academic All-District honors — Abello, Allen, Bockin, Cerda, Drkulec, Haus, Leibold, Ogle, Schlenker and Yim — now are eligible for Academic All-America consideration, with the national honorees selected later this month. Cerda collected first-team Academic All-America plaudits last year, while Ogle was voted a second-team Academic All-American in 2017.

In order to be considered for Academic All-America and Academic All-District status, students must not only maintain a minimum 3.30 GPA, but must also be a starter or key reserve, competing in at least 50 percent of their school’s contests.
