First-year guard set two career highs, averaged 16 points per game in 2-0 week

GOSHEN, Ind. — Freshman women’s basketball guard Graysen Cockerham is the Maple Leaf Athlete of the Week for the week ending November 11.

Cockerham posted a pair of career highs last week, setting a new single-game scoring mark with 15 points Friday in a 72-53 win over Kentucky Christian before besting that total with 17 Saturday in a win over Trinity International. She also tied for the team lead with 15 rebounds, including 9 on Saturday.

A native of Brighton, Michigan, Cockerham has scored in double figures in four straight games, mirroring Goshen’s four-game winning streak as the team has started 4-1. She leads the team with 12.6 points per game to go along with 5.2 rebounds per game, 13 steals and an 84.2 percent mark at the foul line.

The Maple Leafs take their home court at Gunden Gymnasium three times this week: they host Kalamazoo at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Viterbo at 7 p.m. Friday and Ohio Christian at 5 p.m. Saturday.

The Maple Leaf Athlete of the Week is selected each week by a panel of Goshen College administrators, coaches, media and faculty. It will return to its usual Monday slot next week when the Crossroads League has finished announcing all-conference winners.

Goshen College is an affordable, nationally-ranked Christian liberal arts college in Northern Indiana known for leadership in intercultural and international education, sustainability and social justice.

The Maple Leafs compete in 14 varsity sports in the NAIA’s highly competitive Crossroads League and Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference, continuing a tradition of intercollegiate athletics that dates to 1956 and included women’s competition nearly a decade before Title IX.
