Yeaney Hits Game Winner As Hoosiers Defeat No. 10 Iowa, 75-73
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Sophomore guard Bendu Yeaney hit a runner in the lane with 3.8 seconds to go to and overcame a 16-point deficit to give Indiana a 75-73 win over No. 10 Iowa on Thursday night at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
KEY MOMENTS
- Iowa would open the game up with an 11-2 lead, hitting three 3-pointers early. Indiana would get within four on a 3-pointer but the Hawkeyes would connect on six triples in the first 10 minutes to make it a 24-12 lead after one as IU went scoreless from the floor for a four-plus minute stretch.
- In the second, an 11-0 run by Indiana
- The Hoosiers got the first bucket in the second half, but fell silent as Iowa would extend its lead out to the largest of the game at 16, 49-33, with 5:38 to play. But they kept chipping away as Indiana used a 12-1 run to close out the frame, trimming the deficit to just three, 54-51. Patberg and Wise combined for 14 of IU’s 24 points in the third.
- The Hawkeyes would opened up the fourth with back-to-back buckets and pushed its lead to seven. A 6-0 run including another Penn 3-pointer tied the game up with seven minutes to go.
- Two more ties followed with the game all square at 65-65, Patberg would step into a 3-pointer on the right side wing with 2:39 remaining.
- Neither team would score for nearly a minute as Patberg drew a foul in the frontcourt and hit one at the line in the bonus with 41 seconds remaining. Iowa’s Megan Gustafson would get fouled on the next possession and get the bucket but not the bonus shot.
- Penn would step up in the bonus, making two to go up 73-70. But Iowa senior guard Tania Davis would shake the IU defense and hit a 3-pointer with 22 seconds left to tie the game at 73.
- Off the make, Indiana would take it down the court and wind down the clock as Yeaney would drive down the middle and put the jumper up over the Iowa defense to hit the eventual game winner. Davis’ 3-pointer on the other end was partially blocked by Yeaney as time expired.

- Indiana has won the last four meetings against the Hawkeyes in games played at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
- The win for the Hoosiers is their first at home over a top-10 opponent since the 2009-10 season when they beat No. 4/6 Ohio State 67-62 on January 31, 2010.
- IU overcame a 16-point third quarter deficit.
- Ali Patberg (21) and Brenna Wise (24) combined for 45 points and went 16-of-29 (55.2 percent) from the field.
- Patberg connected on 6-of-8 (75 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc.
- Wise added 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Patberg added seven assists, her sixth game this season with seven or more assists.
- Jaelynn Penn scored in double-figures for the 22nd time this season with 14 points. She has scored in double-figures in 16-straight games.
- The Hoosiers used an 8-1 run in the fourth quarter to tie the game 59-59 and took their first lead of the game on a 3-pointer by Brenna Wise to go up 62-61 at the 5:50 mark of the fourth quarter.
- Iowa led by as many as 16 at 49-33 with 5:38 to play in the third quarter. From that point Indiana outscored Iowa 42-24 the rest of the game.
- Indiana made six of their last seven field goals in the game and shot 7-of-9 from the field in the fourth quarter.

“What a terrific win for our group tonight. I’m just really proud and really just happy for them and the job they did. Getting off to a tough start, we knew we were going to have to give up some outside shots in order to contain Megan (Gustafson) on in the inside. They got off to a hot start and we didn’t go away from our game plan. We just kept trying to grind it out and felt like if we could just hit some shots and get them to go down then we were going to keep ourselves in the game. Obviously going down the stretch there just switching defensively and trying to get them out of rhythm really paid off for us. Last play of the game, Bendu comes down offensively obviously and makes a big play and then goes down on the defensive end and makes another big play so she gets a piece of that at the end which was really important to get the victory. I’m happy, really happy, especially just for those kids because they deserve it. You know the last four games without Ali Patberg has been challenging and I’ve just really appreciated how they’ve continued to still have confidence. They knew and they believed that something better was down the pipe for us and tonight was a good way to start it off as we go to Chicago next week.”
