UIndy Repeats as GLVC Men’s Indoor Track & Field Champions
INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis successfully defended its Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championship on Sunday at its own Athletics & Recreation Center (ARC).
The Greyhounds scored 163 points over the two-day event, topping runner-up McKendree University (125) by 38 points. The margin of victory is the largest at the GLVC Championship meet since UIndy defeated Missouri S&T 200-98 in 2013.
The Miners finished third this year with 89.5 points, followed by Lewis University (77.5) and Bellarmine University (54) in the top five. Truman State University (47) and Drury University (33) were sixth and seventh, while University of Illinois Springfield, University of Southern Indiana and Maryville University tied for eighth with 23 points apiece. William Jewell College finished 11th with four points. Quincy University did not register a team point.
At the conclusion of the event, McKendree senior DeMontez McCray earned his third straight GLVC Track Athlete of the Year for the indoor meet, while UIndy senior thrower Austin Hogan picked up his third straight GLVC Field Athlete of the Year accolade as well. University of Illinois Springfield newcomer Blake Jones was named GLVC Freshman of the Year, and UIndy mentor Scott Fangman was recognized by his peers as GLVC Coach of the Year.
Each event winner was named first-team All-Conference, while runners-up were awarded second-team accolades
In addition, UIndy was named the GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award winner, while 12 student-athletes were recognized as GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award honorees and are now candidates for their respective school’s male Spalding Sportsmanship Award at the end of the academic year.
