Grace continues unbeaten start with rout of Calumet

GOSHEN, Ind. – Grace’s women’s basketball team continued its hot start to the season with an 82-48 win over Calumet College of St. Joseph on Friday.

The Lady Lancers (3-0) won by double-digits for the third straight time to kick off the 2019-20 campaign. Grace has won by an average of 31.7 points per game so far this year.

Kamryn Hostetler produced a season-high 22 points in the win, and 11 players for Grace registered a point in a balanced performance.

Although Grace could not consistently make a shot in the first quarter, the Lady Lancers’ defense more than made up for that.

CCSJ committed seven turnovers in the face of Grace’s pressing defense, helping the Lady Lancers overcome a 30-percent shooting quarter.

Hostetler was electric in the period, scoring nine points on a variety of crafty drives into the paint. She hit two free throws with 18 seconds remaining in the quarter to give Grace a 20-10 advantage.

Grace’s 10-point lead quickly ballooned in the second quarter. The Crimson Wave were held scoreless for nearly eight minutes to start the second period.

Hostetler continued her offensive assault, hitting a pair of 3-pointers in the quarter to lead Grace to a commanding 38-19 lead at halftime.

Grace only shot 32 percent from the floor in the half, including 2-of-15 (13 percent) from beyond the arc.

But Grace’s defense dictated the first 20 minutes. CCSJ shot 24 percent as a team and coughed up the ball 15 times before halftime. Grace had 12 steals and scored 11 points off turnovers.

The Lady Lancers were never threatened in the second half. Grace’s lead eventually grew to 38 despite resting the starting lineup for nearly the full fourth quarter.

Hostetler’s 22 points came with three assists and three steals. She made 9-of-10 from the foul line.

Vironnica Drake tallied 15 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists, and Kaylie Warble posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards.

Kyannah Stull stuffed the stat sheet with 8 points, 10 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 assists, and Maddie Ryman added 11 points and four boards off the bench.

Mackenzie Pulley pulled down eight boards, Micaela Box had 6 points, 3 steals and 2 assists, and Olivia Pearson scored five points.

The Crimson Wave committed 33 turnovers, and Grace had 19 steals. Grace owned a 61-38 advantage in rebounding; the team grabbed 25 offensive boards.

The Lady Lancers will play again on Saturday against Roosevelt at 2 p.m.
