LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Just as many collegiate athletic departments and businesses across the country respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, National Fastpitch Coaches Association Executive Director Carol Bruggeman announced a financial plan, which the NFCA Board of Directors approved immediately. Bruggeman will take a 25 percent pay cut, salaried employees will see a 10 percent cut, and hourly employees will have their hours reduced by 10 per week.
“As a non-profit organization, the NFCA is significantly impacted by COVID-19 economic issues,” said Bruggeman. “Even with these budget adjustments, our NFCA team will continue to operate at a high level of service to our membership. We are focused on providing relevant education and important support to our members, while also maintaining fiscal responsibility during these times.”
Since the announcement that spring athletic competitions across the nation, including softball, have been put on hold, the NFCA has been there for its members during this unprecedented time. Committed to member service, the NFCA’s enhanced education has featured two to three webinars (presented by Rapsodo) per week, ranging from Coaching Conversations to financial planning, and continued to produce its weekly podcast, “The Dirt.”
“Times of uncertainty are when leadership is most important, and our entire softball community is grateful to Carol and the NFCA staff for their steady hand,” NFCA Board President and Northwestern University head coach Kate Drohan said. “The NFCA has always been focused on supporting coaches across the nation and maintains an unwavering commitment to delivering on that mission, especially in the midst of these unprecedented circumstances.”
Additionally, the Association, which is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation, has been keeping everyone informed with regards to collegiate eligibility, aid and recruiting, while rolling out a scheduling assistant for all collegiate and high school coaches.

Although collegiate coaches comprised the majority of the organization’s membership in the early days, today they are joined by high school, travel ball, professional and international coaches, along with umpires, clubs, companies and fans of fastpitch softball. Growing from 40 members in 1983 to over 5,500 today, the NFCA boasts members from all 50 states and several international countries.
There are many services offered to the membership, highlighted by education, events, awards and networking opportunities. All-America teams, scholar-athlete accolades, coaching achievements, off-the-field contributions and various grants and scholarships make up the awards program. An annual National Convention, eight regional Coaches Clinics, in-person seminars (NFCCs), tournaments and camps contribute to the Association’s continued event presence.
In addition to all of the above, education remains our top priority. Featuring a grassroots Coaching Tools package compiled of practice plans, drills and evaluation forms, the NFCA also disseminates podcasts, webinars, a mentoring program, publications, legal counsel and accurate and credible information surrounding the sport.
The national office, located in the Crescent Hill community of Louisville, Ky., and the headquarters of 11 employees, 19 Board members and seasonal interns, moved to the Bluegrass State in 2012.
