Mishawaka, Ind. — The Bethel University Women’s Basketball team (7-18) conquered Mount Vernon Nazarene University (11-15) in a Crossroads League showdown Wednesday evening, 82-73, snapping a four-game losing streak.
The Pilots showed promise early in the game going up 8-0, triggered with an early three-pointer from Senior Katie Kinker, two free throws from Maiah Shelton and a layup from Abby Williams. MVNU immediately responded with a 12-point run with 4 minutes to play in the first quarter, but Bethel regained the lead with 5 quick points and never trailed the rest of the way.
The second quarter faired well for the Pilots as they grabbed a six-point run right off the bat and later down the stretch, sparked by multiple three pointers from Kinker, Shelton, and Kallie Mcelroy. The Pilots maintained the lead at half, 33-27.
Bethel was able to get an 11-point lead early in the third with 8:58 to go on a Kinker layup but Mount Vernon clawed back and got within three (42-39) after a layup and free throw from Angela Roshak. The Pilots then took control once again and found themselves up by 10 with 2:47 to play in the third with a Nyla Asad bucket and FT.
The fourth quarter heated up as MVNU found some energy and got within four points on a stretch of turnovers and missed shots plagued the Pilots. But on this night, clutch shooting down the stretch carried Bethel to the win with three- pointers from Shelton and Kinker and layups from Abby Williams and Nyla Asad.
Shelton led Bethel with a game-high 22 points, while Nyla Asad added 18 and Katie Kinker 15 respectively. Abby Williams scored 7 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
