Hawkeyes Fall to Terrapins in B1G Championship

OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Iowa baseball team was defeated in the Big Ten Tournament Championship by Maryland, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at Charles Schwab Field.

Marcus Morgan got the start for Iowa throwing two innings and allowing one hit and striking out two. Four Hawkeye arms appeared out of the bullpen throwing the remaining six innings and allowing four runs on five hits and striking out seven.

“We had a lot of missed opportunities early in the game,” said head coach Rick Heller. “We needed to do some damage against Van Buren and Johnson when we had runners in scoring position, but we hit a few line drives right at the right fielder.”

The Hawkeyes were outhit 6-5 and left six runners on the bases.

“The bad luck morphed into pressing,” said Heller. “When Lippman came in he really pounded the zone. The umpire had a bigger zone today and we weren’t able to get into counts that we wanted to, and Maryland made pitches when they needed to. They didn’t falter, and we weren’t able to do any damage. We had more traffic on the bases, but they did the damage with the long ball.”

Raider Tello was 2-for-4 on the day with a double, and Brennen Dorighi, Kyle Huckstorf, and Brayden Frazier tallied hits for the Hawkeyes.

“I think being in the environment that we were in today will make next week much more normal for our guys regardless of the outcome today,” said Heller. “It was super beneficial to have the awesome crowd that came out for us. It put our guys in a different situation than what they are normally in and anytime you are put in a situation like that it’s a positive and it’s going to help us grow.”

OF NOTE

– Iowa moves to 42-14 on the season.

– This was the third time Iowa was shutout this season.
