Buckeyes Win Overtime Thriller vs. No. 4 Badgers, 3-2
Gildon and Halliday tally in third period, Burnside scores winner
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s hockey team came from behind to down No. 4 Wisconsin in overtime, 3-2, Friday in Value City Arena. No goals were scored until the third period. Wisconsin went ahead twice, answered by the Buckeyes each time. Davis Burnside’s breakaway goal with 22 seconds left in overtime lifted Ohio State to the win. Stephen Halliday had a goal and an assist for the Buckeyes, with Michael Gildon also scoring. Scooter Brickey had two assists and Logan Terness stopped 28 shots in the Ohio State net.
The Buckeyes (10-15-4, 2-15-2 B1G) and Badgers (22-7-2, 13-5-1 B1G) will wrap up the weekend and season series at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Columbus. The game will be televised by BTN and on Ohio State Radio.
How it Happened
- The teams were scoreless and there were just two Wisconsin power plays through the first 40 minutes. The Badgers had the shot advantage in the first period, 11-9, and in the second, 6-4.
- Wisconsin opened the scoring at 5:40 of the third when Jack Horbach put home the rebound of a shot that went off the crossbar.
- The Buckeyes went on their first power play of the game at 6:58 but were unable to take advantage of the five-minute major chance.
- Buckeye senior Michael Gildon tied the game at 14:08, scoring from the high slot off a pass from Stephen Halliday. Damien Carfagna also assisted on the goal, Gildon’s fourth of the year.
- Wisconsin pushed back ahead on a Ben Dexheimer goal, scoring unassisted on a two-on-one rush.
- The Buckeyes pulled their goalie for the extra attacker and tied the game at 18:21. Halliday snuck a shot through from the side of the net, assisted by Theo Wallberg and Scooter Brickey.
- The Badgers had the edge in shots, 9-8, in the third period.
- In overtime, the teams combined for six shots on goal, with Logan Terness stopping all four Badger chances.
- Overtime started 3-on-3. A Badger too many men on the ice penalty gave the Buckeyes a 4-on-3 advantage, which was nullified by an Ohio State hooking penalty less than a minute into the power play chance.
- Ohio State netted the win with the teams skating 3-on-3 and just 22 seconds left in the overtime period. On the winner, Max Montes led Davis Burnside with a long pass off the boards, allowing Burnside to get just behind the Badgers. His chip shot went past the goalie for the Buckeye victory. Brickey had the second assist on the OT winner.
- The Badgers ended the game ahead in shots, 30-23. Logan Terness played 64:29 for Ohio State and had 28 saves.
- Each team was 0-for-2 on the power play in the game.
