IUSB baseball sweeps doubleheader over Rio Grande and IUPUC

DUNBAR, WV.- The Indiana University South Bend Titans (3-4, 0-0 CCAC) won both games of their doubleheader, defeating the University of Rio Grande Red Storm 15-12 and Indiana University Purdue Columbus 14-7.

Game 1

IU South Bend got out to an early 1-0 lead when left fielder Logan Smith led off game one of Friday’s doubleheader with a home run to right center field.

A second inning RBI single from second baseman Devin Smith and a bases clearing 3 RBI double from Logan Smith extended the Titans lead to 5-0 through two innings of play.

Rio Grande tacked on one run in the third inning before a fourth inning RBI double from Anthony Pohl and an RBI single from Kaleb Farnham furthered the IUSB lead to 7-1.

The Red Storm answered in the fifth inning, scoring eight runs on five hits to take the lead 9-7.

Friday’s game one entered the ninth inning with the Titans trailing 12-8 before Braedon Leathed hit a three run home run and Logan Smith hit a last out game tying home run to send the game to extra innings.

Another Braedon Leathed home run and a passed ball scored three more runners to help the Titans win Friday’s game one 15-12.

Game 2

A hot IU South Bend offense scored at least one run every time they came to the plate to help the Titans take game two 14-7 over IUPUC.

Three different Titans recorded multi hit games including Anthony Pohl who finished with four hits, Kaleb Farnham who finished with three hits and Gabe Cortez who finished with two hits.

Pohl’s four hits included three singles and a double while driving in two runs while Farnham’s three hits featured two singles and a third inning home run.

Cortez’ two singles drove in one run to help the Titans clinch the victory.

The Indiana University South Bend Titans return to action tomorrow, Saturday, February 24th when they play another doubleheader, facing the Red Storm of Rio Grande at 11:00 AM ET before squaring off with Indiana University Purdue University Columbus at 1:00 PM ET to conclude the weekend.
