Football Claims Two CUSA Weekly Honors
DALLAS-A key road win by Jax State football on Wednesday has led to a pair of players being selected as Conference USA Players of the Week for their performance in a 31-21 win at Liberty.
Senior running back Tre Stewart was honored as Co-Offensive Player of the Week and sophomore cornerback Geimere Latimer was the Defensive Player of the Week.
Stewart became the first Jax State back since Troymaine Pope in 2015 to post back-to-back 200-yard rushing games with 232 yards and four touchdowns. His 75-yard touchdown run with 10:30 left in the first quarter tied the game and his 28-yard scoring run gave Jax State its first lead.
The Winston-Salem native added a pair of one-yard runs in the second half, both resulting in 10-point advantages. Stewart currently leads Conference USA in rushing at 914 yards (114.3 per game) and 15 touchdowns.
Stewart is also one of just three FBS players with multiple four touchdown games this season.
Latimer intercepted a pass with 2:42 left in the fourth quarter with the Gamecocks up three points and returned it to the two-yard line to help preserve the road victory and keep Jax State unbeaten in Conference USA play. The native of Fairburn, Ga. also chipped in six tackles to the winning effort and helped limit the Liberty passing attack to 147 yards.
He’s currently seventh on the team in tackles with 27 and has intercepted two passes and has broken up three others.
Jax State is on the road Saturday to take on Louisiana Tech at 3:30 p.m.
