OPPORTUNISTIC IRISH STUN NO. 3 MINNESOTA 3-2 ON ROAD TO GIVE RETIRING COACH JACKSON WIN NO. 600

By JOHN FINERAN

In a 26-year collegiate coaching career full of achievements – two national championships, three runner-up finishes and conference championships galore – personal numbers mean little to retiring Notre Dame hockey coach Jeff Jackson.

Yes, Jackson did smile a bit when Irish captain Justin Janicke presented him with a puck after his 600thcareer victory Friday night – a 3-2 triumph at No. 3 Minnesota as the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal series between the two teams opened before 5,551 at the 3M Arena at Mariucci.

“The most important number for me,” Jackson told his cheering players, “is 1-0 right now.”

The victory for the 11-21-3 Irish, who finished in seventh place in the Big Ten during the regular season, puts them up 1-0 on coach Bob Motzko’s 24-9-4 Golden Gophers, who tied for the regular-season title with Michigan State. Game Two of the best-of-three quarterfinal series is Saturday night at 8 p.m. EST with a third game, if necessary, scheduled for Sunday at 7 p.m. EDT.

“The kids did what I asked them to do,” said the 69-year-old Jackson, who announced his retirement prior to the current season which has been a struggle, to say the least. The victory was the first Friday victory since a 3-3 overtime tie and 2-1 shootout win over Penn State outdoors at Wrigley Field on Jan. 3. It was the first Friday night regulation victory since a 5-2 triumph over Harvard in the opening game of the Friendship Four Tournament at Belfast, Northern Ireland on Nov. 29. It also was the first Friday night triumph against a Big Ten opponent since a 3-2 overtime triumph over Wisconsin on Nov. 1 at the Compton Family Ice Arena.

Jackson knew his team faced an uphill battle against the highly talented Minnesota squad which featured 16 players who have been drafted by National Hockey League teams – the most of any team in the Big Ten.

He was upfront with his players and they took his words to heart for 60 minutes.

“They were going to have to compete at a really high level,” Jackson continued. “They were going to have to execute, which I think we did a pretty good job in both areas (offense and defense). I told them it was going to be hard, that we were going to have to minimize mistakes which would make it harder.”

Instead, the biggest mistakes belonged to the Gophers, who outshot the Irish 32-24 and had another 15 shots blocked by the Irish. Minnesota graduate goaltender Liam Souliere made two of the biggest.

Souliere, who on Jan. 18 was beaten by Blake Biondi’s overtime goal in a 4-3 Irish triumph, first fanned on junior defenseman Axel Kumlin’s high shot from center ice into the Minnesota zone at 1:30 of the opening period. Then after surrendering a goal to junior defenseman Michael Mastrodomenico at 15:07 for a 2-0 Irish lead, Souliere tried to clear the puck from behind his net early in the second period. But his pass was intercepted by sophomore left wing Brennan Ali, who deposited a backhander between the goalie’s pads for a 3-1 Irish lead at 1:18. Motzko immediately replaced Souliere, who stopped eight shots in his 21:18 of action, with sophomore Nathan Souliere, who would turn aside all 13 shots he faced.

Meanwhile, Say, who allowed just three goals in five periods of action the last time the teams met in Minneapolis in January, was brilliant, stopping 30 of the 32 shots the Gophers put on net. He made 12 saves on 13 shots in the first period – Matthew Wood scored a power-play goal at 19:54 – and six of the saves came during a five minute-plus span before Mastrodomenico’s goal. Say then stopped all 11 shots he faced in the second period and surrendered just one goal – defenseman Sam Rinzel’s 10th of the season at 8:16 – from the eight shots he faced in the final 20 minutes.

“Owen held us in there when they had their pushes,” Jackson noted. “We needed to have good goaltending to win that game. You don’t win this time of the year without it.

“We got a couple of big penalty-kills,” Jackson continued. “I just liked the battle of the guys. They competed hard, they blocked shots. They did the things you have to do to win at this time of the year. Now it’s a matter if we can do it again.”

Sophomore center Cole Knuble, the team’s leading scorer with 37 points entering the game, assisted on Kumlin’s sixth goal of the season (his 27th of the season) and later finished with a team-high three blocked shots, two of them in the final minutes after Motzko had pulled Airey for a sixth attacker in the final 1:28.

Graduate right wing Ian Murphy and sophomore left wing Carter Slaggert set up the goal by Mastrodomenico, who finished with four shots on net, one fewer than fellow defenseman Paul Fischer. In fact, 13 of Notre Dame’s 24 shots on goal came off the sticks of the defensive corps.  Fischer and Henry Nelson each blocked two shots.

Sophomore center Danny Nelson, meanwhile, was held without a point but did come up with two shots on net while the Irish were killing a second-period kneeing penalty to Ali. Nelson also helped the Irish win the faceoff battles, 30-29, with his 16-11 performance.

Those performances meant more to Jackson, who became the ninth Division I coach in college hockey history to reach the 600-win plateau.

“You know, I’ve gotten a lot of notes about (600 wins),” Jackson said. “For me, there’s so many people involved with all of those wins. Certainly the players … the (assistant) coaches, the trainers, the strength coach, everybody. There are so many people involved in winning hockey games. It’s great that they come up with that stat for coaches, but we really don’t win hockey games – the players do.”

Friday night, his players did just that for Jeff Jackson.
