IUSB Softball Ends Florida Trip With Win

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Indiana University South Bend Softball Team (5-17, 0-0 CCAC) wrapped their Florida Spring Break Trip with four games against three different opponents over a two day span, going 1-3 losing both games on day five of the trip by scores of 5-2 against University of Fort Lauderdale (25-11, 0-0 Conf.) and 2-1 against Webber International University (FL) (10-18, 1-5 Conf.). Day six, the final day of the trip, the Titans split a doubleheader with Dallas Christian College (9-13, 0-0 Conf.) losing game one 13-3 and taking the last game of the week 3-1.
Game 1 (L 5-2)
The Titans dropped a pitcher’s duel in their first game after an off day in Florida against University of Fort Lauderdale 5-2. The game was held scoreless through four innings of play, until UFTL put up three runs in the top of the fifth inning. The Titans responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it a 3-1 ballgame. Both teams traded a run in the sixth inning to make it a 4-2 game in favor of the Eagles. UFTL added another run in the top of the seventh inning and set down the Titans in the bottom half of the inning to secure the 5-2 victory. Abigail Yarnell led the offense going 3-4 with 3 doubles, while Maddie Leisher had the lone RBI for the Titans. Savannah Hamilton suffered the loss throwing 7.0 innings giving up 5 runs, 4 earned, on 9 hits and 6 strikeouts.
Game 2 (L 2-1)
For the final game of the day the Titans were once again in a pitcher’s duel, this time with Webber International University. The Titans scored a run to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning thanks to a Reece Douglass RBI single. Webber International tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth inning with a single run. After a scoreless fifth inning Webber International added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Titans were set down in order in the top of the seventh inning to drop game two of the day 2-1. Reece Douglass had the lone hit for the Titan offense finishing the day 1-3 at the plate. Elyse Starr had a solid outing in the circle throwing 6.0 innings giving up 2 runs, 2 earned, on 11 hits and 2 strikeouts but took the loss despite her efforts.
Game 3 (L 13-3)
On the final day of the Titans Spring Break trip they faced Dallas Christian College for the second time of the week, this time for a doubleheader. The first game was all DCC as they put up 11 runs in the top of the first inning, running away with the game early. The Titans tacked on two runs in the third and one run in the fourth inning but it was too little too late as the game ended after five innings due to the mercy rule. Jaylah Harlan went 1-3 at the plate with 2 RBI’s, while Abigail Yarnell also went 1-3 with 1 RBI. Elyse Starr took the loss in the circle unable to record an out in her start going 0.0 innings, giving up 8 runs, 6 earned, on 7 hits and no strikeouts. Jaylah Harlan threw 5.0 innings in relief giving up 5 runs, 4 earned, on 7 hits and 3 strikeouts.
Game 4 (W 3-1)
The Titans bounced back quickly after a tough start to the final day in the Sunshine State. IUSB got out to an early lead scoring three runs in the top of the third inning, DCC responded right away with a run of their own in the bottom of third inning to bring the score to 3-1 with four innings remaining in the game. Savannah Hamilton was dealing on the mound shutting the DCC offense the rest of the game guiding the Titans to a 3-1 win in their final game in Florida. Grace Swangin was 2-3 with an RBI at the plate, while Abigail Yarnell and Savannah Hamilton each added an RBI. Savannah Hamilton picked up the win in the circle throwing 7.0 innings giving up 1 run, 1 earned, on 12 hits and 4 strikeouts.
The Titans will make the trip back to South Bend over the weekend and will be back in action on Tuesday March 25th for their home opener against Defiance College (OH) at Newton Park, first pitch is set for 3pm ET.
