A non-conference sweep at Northern Michigan was followed by last weekend’s sweep at home against then third-ranked Penn State.

WHAT BROCK SHEAHAN HAS TO SAY ABOUT …

(MSU goaltender Trey Augustine) “He’s obviously one of the best goaltenders in the country if not the best. … It means we have to spend time in their end; we have to create second-chance opportunities, we have to be good in transition to generate offense. … We just have to make it hard for him.”

(Last year’s 1-0 playoff loss at Michigan State) “It’s a different team. I think any of our guys who have been here for the last couple of years know a positive experience will give them confidence that they can do it. Regardless how the first four games have gone in conference, I think our group is learning that when we play to our style of play – playing the right way – we’re going to give ourselves the opportunity to win. It’s about us doing that all the time. Where we’ve struggled is we haven’t been able to do that consistently. You’re not going to have consistent results if you are not playing consistently well. That’s where we’ve had trouble. We’re playing one of the best teams in the country, if not the best. We have to be ready to play regardless. We have to get to our game as fast as possible and play it as much as possible.”

(Improving the offensive production) “We did not generate a ton on Friday at Minnesota. We probably played our worst game (of the season). We did generate a lot more on Saturday. My message to the guys is not about scoring, it’s playing the right way and generating enough (scoring opportunities). When we play to our capability, we generate. The goals will come over time.”

(What are some positive things you learned from last weekend) “I thought on Saturday, for around 50 minutes, we played a pretty good hockey game. As things got away from us, we got away from our game. It was nice to see us play in transition fast … support the puck, be connected, be quick to close and hard to play against in our own end, things that we didn’t do on Friday. It’s another opportunity … if we can continue to build off that game, I think we’ll see results come. That was encouraging. The discouraging things, 10 games in, is how inconsistent we’ve been with our game. Practice has been good this week, which has been a real positive. That’s what we’re aiming to do – play to our style of hockey every day, every shift, and we’re just not there yet. But I’m hopeful to see it this weekend.”

(What players have taken a step forward this season) “Brennan Ali has been really good all year. He is playing a power forward game; whatever line he’s on, he’s helping his linemates, driving the play and being good offensively and defensively. Maddox Fleming … has proven every day he can play for us. He has an offensive ability – it just hasn’t shown yet. I think Danny Nelson has played good hockey recently – it’s just not going in for him. He generated the most for us on the weekend again. Hopefully he can keep doing that. He’ll score over time if he keeps doing that. And then Nick Kempf has been really good.”

(What makes Michigan State such a difficult team to match up against) “They do a lot of what we’re trying to do. They play to their brand consistently – they play fast, they’re on top of you, they take away time and space, they have talent. There’s a reason why they’ve been so consistent. They know what their game is and they play to it all the time regardless to whom they are playing. It’s been very impressive. It’s going to be a very great challenge for us. I’m excited to see how we’ll do against them.”

NEXT UP: The Spartans return home to meet No. 7 Wisconsin Friday and Saturday nights. … The Irish are off next weekend and return to action in Massachusetts during Thanksgiving week to play at Hockey East Association rivals Merrimack (Wednesday, Nov. 26 at 2 p.m.) and Boston College (Friday, Nov. 28 at 1 p.m.).
