IRISH RETURN TO COMPTON ICE ARENA TO FACE RED-HOT BADGERS
By John Fineran
Notre Dame closes out the 2025 portion of its hockey schedule this Friday and Saturday when it returns to Big Ten Conference action against the No. 2 Wisconsin Badgers.
Coach Brock Sheahan’s Fighting Irish are coming off a split of non-conference games around Thanksgiving in Massachusetts, beating Merrimack 5-4 on Wednesday before falling 5-3 to Boston College Friday. Notre Dame last played at home in a Big Ten series Nov. 14-15 against then top-ranked Michigan State, falling 4-1 and 3-1.
Coach Mike Hastings’ Badgers are one of college hockey’s hottest teams and enter the series well rested following their pre-Thanksgiving series sweep of top-ranked Michigan State in East Lansing. Wisconsin overcame a 2-0 deficit in the opener with four goals on way to a 5-4 victory Friday and then won 2-1 in overtime. The sweep came two Saturdays after the Badgers knocked off then No. 2-ranked Michigan 6-1 in Ann Arbor.
Wisconsin opened the season ranked No. 20 in the USCHO.com media poll and No. 19 in the USA Hockey/The Rink Live coaches’ poll. Starting with a non-conference sweep of Alaska Fairbanks in late October, they have won eight of their last 10 games, moving up to No. 2 in both polls after their weekend sweep of the Spartans and staying there after their weekend off. In addition to sweeping Alaska Fairbanks and Michigan State, Wisconsin has swept Lindenwood and Minnesota and tied currently No. 13 Minnesota State twice while splitting Big Ten series with Michigan and Ohio State.

Notre Dame 3, Wisconsin 2 (OT) (Nov. 1, 2024): In the series opener at Compton, Cole Knuble scored the game-winner at 2:11 of overtime with the Fighting Irish on a power play. Henry Nelson opened the game’s scoring at 7:38 of the first period before the Badgers got goals from Ryan Botterill and Owen Lindmark to take a 2-1 lead in the second period. But the Irish responded to Lindmark’s goal 31 seconds later when Brennan Ali tied the game at 18:47 of the second period. Owen Say picked up the victory in goal making 42 saves.
Wisconsin 2, Notre Dame 1 (Nov. 2, 2024): After a scoreless first period, Owen Lindmark gave Wisconsin a 1-0 lead at 5:34 of the second period. Notre Dame’s Ryan Helliwell tied the game at 12:26 after assists from Cole Knuble and Axel Kumlin. Simon Tassy got the game-winner for Wisconsin at 19:25 of the second period. Owen Say made 33 saves.
Wisconsin 7, Notre Dame 3 (Feb. 21, 2025): In the series opener in Madison, the Badgers scored three times in the first 13:35 of the first period against starting goaltender Owen Say on way to a 4-0 lead. Ryland Mosley finished with two goals and two assists for the Badgers, who also got single tallies from Zach Schulz, Simon Tassy, Owen Mehlenbacher and Jack Horbach. Nicholas Kempf relieved Say and allowed four goals while making 16 saves.
Notre Dame 6, Wisconsin 1 (Feb. 22, 2025): The Irish jumped to a 3-0 lead with goals from Niko Jovanovic, Justin Janicke and Cole Knuble before Anthony Kehrer ruined the shutout bid of Owen Say, who stopped 14 of 15 shots in the second period and 31 for the game. Nine seconds after Kehrer’s goal at 16:35, however, Danny Nelson regained Notre Dame’s three-goal lead and Ian Murphy and Grant Silianoff padded it with goals in the third period.
LAST TIMES OUT: Badgers were off last week after sweeping then top-ranked Michigan State 5-4 and 2-1 in East Lansing Nov. 21 and 22. … Notre Dame travelled to Massachusetts for a pair of non-conference games against Hockey East teams, beating Merrimack 5-4 on Wednesday before losing to then No. 15 Boston College 5-3 Friday.
Wisconsin 5, Michigan State 4 (Nov. 21): The Badgers rallied from a 2-0 deficit to score four unanswered second-period goals (by Christian Fitzgerald, Blake Montgomery, Adam Pietila and Tyson Dyck) to surprise No. 1 Michigan State in East Lansing. The game-winner came from Ryan Botterill at 9:50 of the third period and ended MSU’s nine-game winning streak. In his first action of the season, sophomore goaltender Eli Pulver made 35 saves for Wisconsin.
Wisconsin 2, Michigan State 1 (Nov. 22): Blake Montgomery gave the Badgers a 1-0 lead with his power-play goal at 10:06 of the second period before Michigan State tied the game with 40 seconds left in regulation with a power-play goal. But Christian Fitzgerald found defenseman Ben Dexheimer crashing toward the net and a sliding Dexheimer tipped the puck past Trey Augustine at 2:36 in overtime. Pulver finished with 32 saves.
Notre Dame 5, Merrimack 4 (Nov. 26): Trailing 3-1 entering the third period in the game at Lawler Rink in North Andover, Mass., the Fighting Irish scored four times, with Cole Brown’s second goal of the period at 14:37 being the game-winner. Brown finished with three points, one fewer than linemate Cole Knuble, who had a goal and three assists, all in the third period. Danny Nelson and Evan Werner had the other goals for Notre Dame, which got 31 saves from Nicholas Kempf while ending a seven-game winless streak.
Boston College 5, Notre Dame 3 (Nov. 28): Once again, Notre Dame jumped out to a 1-0 lead with an early power-play goal from Danny Nelson on Friday afternoon in Chestnut Hill. WHAT BROCK SHEAHAN HAS TO SAY ABOUT …
(What did you like about last week’s games at Merrimack and Boston College) “It was nice to see us play more to our capability 5-on-5 throughout both games. Over time, if we continue to build on that, you’ll see more consistent results. … I thought, after it was (Merrimack leading) 3-1, (we) pretty consistently generate, have the puck, play to our style – it was good to see. There was a lot of good in the BC game, and you don’t get the result. … I thought our shot quality was really high. … I’d like to see us continue to push and play the way we did in those two games.”
(The quality of the teams in the Big Ten and this weekend’s opponent Wisconsin) “The Big Ten has talent up and down. Wisconsin last year … really is their roster that much different (this year)? There are some pieces which are different (but) now they’re the No. 2 in the country and their drivers are the same as last year. For teams to have success in this league, they have to play their game all the time. That’s my message to my team. If we play our game well and impose our style of play, that gives us the best chance to win.”
(The play of right wing Cole Knuble) “I think he’s been inconsistent and he will tell you that. … But again recently – and I’ll go back to (the Saturday 3-1 loss to) Michigan State – he has started to play like he is capable of (playing), which is being a dominant force. He generates when he is playing really well off the puck. … Obviously (his) line adjustment has worked. (Center) Sutter (Muzzatti) is playing really well (and left wing) Cole Brown is a very talented hockey player and is progressing. … As far as Cole, he’s playing the way he’s capable of and I expect that to continue.”
(The play of center Danny Nelson and other players in Massachusetts) “Danny was really good. He’s starting to bury his chances; he’s continued to generate, and his play away from the puck has been even better. … (Nelson’s right wing Evan) Werner is taking steps. … (Nelson’s left wing) Brennan Ali continues to be consistent. … Those guys have been really, really good. … (Defenseman) Henry Nelson is starting to play more like he’s capable of, which is going to help. … (Defenseman Michael) Mastrodomenico is getting more consistent which is going to help us. … One guy who has taken some major steps is (freshman right wing) Will Belle. He’s minutes have been limited – eight to 12 minutes a game – but I actually think he’s starting to generate and push his game the right way. … (Freshman center) Pano Fimis has produced on the power play.”
(More on Wisconsin) “They are scoring a little bit more than they have in the past. They look very good – they play fast, they play hard, they are well-coached, they have solid goaltending. They don’t have many holes. Their power play is clicking at a high level. With a Mike Hastings team, you know they’re going to work, they’re going to get around the net. In some ways, there are some similarities with the way we’re supposed to play and how they (the Badgers) are playing. So I think it’s going to be another good matchup for us, another test to see where our growth is at.”
NEXT UP: Wisconsin returns to action after Christmas as host of the Kwik Trip Face-Off Tournament at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee. The Badgers will play Lake Superior State in the second game Dec. 28 following the Boston College-Western Michigan opener. The tournament concludes on Monday, Dec. 29 with consolation and championship games. … Notre Dame returns after Christmas to play a home-and-home series with defending NCAA champion Western Michigan, meeting the Broncos Jan. 2 at 7 p.m. at Compton before visiting the Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo Jan. 3 at 6 p.m.
