Crossroads League Announces Athletes of the Week | January 12-18
JACKSON, Mich. – The Crossroads League Athletes of the Week were announced on Monday, recognizing the league’s top individual performances from January 12 through 18. Sports Information Directors from the league institutions nominate student-athletes for the awards and vote on each week’s winners.
Women’s Basketball Offensive Player of the Week
Emma Sperry, Grace
Sperry netted 27 points in a 97-95 loss to Bethel and 32 points in a 94-78 win at Goshen, averaging 29.5 points per game for the Lancers. In addition to the scoring, Sperry dished out 3.5 assists per game and added 7.5 rebounds, 5.0 blocks and 4.0 steals per game.
Women’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Week
Emma Sperry, Grace
Sperry stuffed the stat sheets for Grace in games against Bethel and Goshen, putting up 10 blocks, eight steals and 15 rebounds for the Lancers. For the week, the second-year forward had 29.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5.0 blocks, 4.0 steals and 3.5 assists per game.
Men’s Basketball Offensive Player of the Week
Caedmon Bontrager, Indiana Wesleyan
Bontrager powered No. 11 Indiana Wesleyan past No. 3 Bethel with 29 points, nine rebounds and two steals and went on to average 22.5 points per game on 68.0-percent shooting from the field in IWU’s two wins. The junior also grabbed 9.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.0 steals per game.
Men’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Week
Tyler Raasch, Grace
Raasch helped top-ranked Grace remain unbeaten with wins over No. 3 Bethel and Goshen. The freshman had 27 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks against BU, and closed the week with 19.5 points, 8.0 boards and 2.5 blocks per victory.
Women’s Indoor TF Track Athlete of the Week
Hannah Reuter, Marian
Reuter finished first place in the 600-meters for MU and provisionally qualified for Nationals with a time of 1:36.75. Reuter also finished runner-up in the long jump with a leap of 5.52 meters.
Women’s Indoor TF Field Athlete of the Week
Ozofu Magaji, Marian
Magaji logged a pair of top-three finishes for Marian at the Indiana Tech Invite, taking second with a B-standard in the weight throw and ending third in the shot put. Magaji posted distances of 17.05 meters in the weight throw and 13.16 meters in the shot put.
Men’s Indoor TF Track Athlete of the Week
Jan Busam, Huntington
Busam hit a pair of provisional-qualifying marks for Huntington at the Bellarmine Open, posting B-standards in the 200 and 400-meters. In addition to qualifying for Nationals, the sophomore won the 400 and finished second in the 200.
Men’s Indoor TF Field Athlete of the Week
Victor Dailey, Marian
Dailey provisionally qualified for Nationals in the high jump with a first-place height of 2.04 meters for Marian at the Indiana Tech Invite.
Women’s Bowler of the Week
Lexie Jones, Marian
Jones finished 48th overall at the ISBPA Collegiate Classic, striking 961 pins over five games to average 192.2 pins per game for Marian.
Men’s Bowler of the Week
Brendan Riley, Goshen
Riley took 20th out of 473 bowlers at the ISBPA Collegiate Classic. The sophomore averaged a score of 222.2 over five games, posting a high score of 256 and registering four games with a score of 212 and above.
