IRISH SKATERS FIT TO BE TIED 3-3 BY FALCONS, WHO WIN SHOOTOUT
By John Fineran
SOUTH BEND – The last thing Notre Dame hockey coach Brock Sheahan probably wanted to do late Friday night was put his team on two buses for the two-hour trip to Bowling Green, Ohio.
After ending a long losing streak last weekend with a dominant Big Ten victory over Ohio State, the Fighting Irish showed several flashes of improvement again Friday night against old CCHA rival Bowling Green. Unfortunately, the streaking Falcons overcame three Irish leads in regulation for a 3-3 tie and then survived a 3-on-3 overtime which the Irish dominated before winning a 1-0 shootout in front of a sellout crowd 5,063 at the Lefty Smith Rink in the Compton Family Ice Arena.
Freshman center Noah Morneau, who had missed Bowling Green’s previous five games with an injury, beat Notre Dame goaltender Nicholas Kempf for the game-tying goal at 5:52 of the third period and then scored the only shootout goal after the teams couldn’t decide a winner through 65 minutes of regulation and overtime.
The game goes into the record books as a tie for both teams, but clearly coach Dennis Williams and his Falcons, who are 9-2-2 in their last 13 games and 14-6-5 overall, had a happier bus trip back to Bowling Green where the two teams will conclude their home-and-home series tonight before more than 5,000 fans at the Slater Family Ice Arena. The Irish, meanwhile, fell to 5-18-2 but are now on a 1-0-1 unbeaten streak after breaking a 10-game winless streak and their 0-13 Big Ten start.
“They’re a good hockey team and they’re chasing an at-large bid,” Sheahan said of the Falcons, who are battling St. Thomas, Michigan Tech and Augustana for the CCHA regular-season title but also are No. 20 in the NCAA Power Index that will eventually send the top 16 teams to the NCAA tournament come March. “We generated a lot (of shots) in the first two periods, but (then) you don’t score at the rate you want to, and we played the third period like we were just hoping to win.”
Making it a long night for the Irish was 6-foot-6 junior goaltender Cole Moore, who made 30 saves, including five in overtime and also got help from the goal pipes when Notre Dame’s Brennan Ali hit one at 2:27 of the extra session. Moore then stopped Notre Dame’s Sutter Muzzatti, Cole Knuble and Danny Nelson in the shootout after Morneau’s theatrics. Kempf, meanwhile, stopped the other two Bowling Green shootout attempts after making 28 saves in regulation and overtime.
“We did have some pushback in the third,” Sheahan continued. “But we waited until it was tied again. You just can’t leave anything to chance, especially with where we’re at. You just have to keep playing, keep working to get better.”
One player who is getting it done right now for the Irish is 6-foot-6 graduate center Muzzatti, a transfer from RPI who earned Big Ten Third Star of the Week honors after his two-goal, two-assist performance in the 6-1 victory over Ohio State. Friday, Muzzatti figured in all three Irish goals, assisting on defenseman Henry Nelson’s first-period goal and then assisting on Knuble’s power-play goal at 14:28 of the second period that made it 2-1 Irish before scoring his team-leading 11th goal of the season at 1:54 of the third period to give Notre Dame a 3-2 lead just 48 seconds after the Falcons had tied the game at 2-all on Ty Higgins’ power-play goal.
“(Muzzatti)’s an unbelievable player,” Sheahan said. “At that size, he can skate, he’s competitive and he just does the right things when he’s out there. He’s been our best player most of the year.”
With his three-point night, Muzzatti has seven in the last two games and leads the Irish with 24 points in 25 games played, two more than linemate Evan Werner. Muzzatti likes the direction the Irish have taken the last two games.
“Definitely, we’d like to string together some good games and get some momentum we can carry back into (Big Ten) conference,” Muzzatti said. “Their barn will be rocking tomorrow (Saturday at Slater is Orange Wave Night for the Falcons). We’ll need to get a hot start and stick with it.”
For the second straight game, Notre Dame jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Muzzatti got the puck back to defenseman Jimmy Jurcev who fed it over to his blueline partner Henry Nelson. Nelson then fired the puck on net and Moore may have been distracted by two Irish skaters, the puck beating the goalie high over his glove at 4:32 of the opening period.
Notre Dame then got an excellent opportunity to increase the lead late in the period when Bowling Green’s 6-foot-4 junior defenseman Gustav Stjernberg hit Knuble from behind into the boards at 17:44 and was assessed a five-minute major and game misconduct. But the Irish failed to score on the five-minute major, managing just three shots at Brown before the penalty expired early in the second period.
Senior right wing Quinn Emerson, who had a three-point night for the Falcons, evened the score at 11:34 of the second period at 1-1 when he finished off a 2-on-1 break.
But the Irish regained the lead at 14:28 of the period when Knuble batted home a rebound after Brown had stopped shots by Muzzatti and Werner with the Irish on a power play.
The Irish still led 2-1 late in the period when they drew their first penalty of the night for too many men on the ice at 18:08, and they dug themselves a deeper hole 61 seconds later when Muzzatti went off for hooking, giving the Falcons a 5-against-3 skaters advantage.
Kempf kept the Falcons off the board as the Irish killed off the first penalty. But defenseman Ty Higgins tied it at 1:06 of the third period.
The Irish quickly responded with the teams back to full strength. Axel Kumlin gave Werner the puck in the Bowling Green defensive zone, and Werner passed it off to Muzzatti in the faceoff circle. Muzzatti then backhanded a shot toward the net where Werner was waiting, but the puck went off Higgins’ skate past Moore at 1:54 for a 3-2 Irish lead.
But less than four minutes later, Morneau skated away from Werner and beat Kempf at 5:52 to tie it at 3-3, and it remained that way the rest of the period.
Notre Dame dominated the five-minute 3-on-3 overtime period, but Moore kept them scoreless. First he stopped Danny Nelson at 0:35 and then denied Muzzatti at 1:31. Ali’s shot hit the pipe at 2:27. Moore then denied Knuble at 2:57, Kumlin at 3:23 and Muzzatti again at 4:17 before Kempf stopped the Falcons’ only shot, by Ben Doran, at 4:31.
