Calhoun to Coach Women’s Soccer for Ancilla
Donaldson – Adam Calhoun has been named the Ancilla College women’s soccer coach. He replaces Justin Crew who has moved from the women’s side and taken the men’s soccer position. The new coach, a native of Argos, IN, is transitioning from an admissions position at Ancilla.
Calhoun was part of the Ancilla men’s team that first qualified for the National Junior College Athletic Association Region XII tournament in 2009. Due to injuries, he was part of the team for three-seasons and played as a left midfielder, an outside back and finally found his niche as the starting goalkeeper. In 2013, he became the college’s men’s goalkeeping coach and handled that duty for four-seasons. He was named an assistant coach in the women’s program in 2014 as he shuttled between the two teams and continued to work with the men’s goalkeepers.
The assistant women’s position introduced him to program development, recruiting and coaching.
“I am very excited to have Adam Calhoun as our women’s soccer coach,” said Athletic Director Brian Pearison. “He has coached here for the past three years with the women’s team. One of Adam’s greatest traits is that he is a good recruiter. I am confident that the soccer team is in good hands with Coach Calhoun.”
During the summers and early spring, he worked with FC Indiana’s men’s and women’s teams as a goalkeeper coach and scout in 2015-2017. He also spent time working with the Haiti Women’s National Soccer team that was training in the area in 2013 and 2015.
“I am very excited and thankful to have the opportunity to coach at my alma mater. It truly is a dream of mine,” Calhoun said. “We have a great group of returners and a great incoming class. I really believe we will turn some more heads this upcoming season and continue to grow the women’s soccer program here at Ancilla College. I can’t wait to see what this great group of student-athletes can do on the field and in the classroom.”
This will be the fourth season for the women’s soccer team. The first year, they struggled as recruiting got a late start and overall numbers on the team were low. Last year, they finished 4-10 and 3-7 in Michigan Community College Athletic Association and made an appearance in the NJCAA Regional tournament. In 2017, the scores got closer and the Lady Chargers found a way to score a little more consistently. With a good foundations of players returning, Calhoun can work on finding key players that will make the team even more competitive.
