Bethel softball splits doubleheader at USSSA Space Coast Games

VIERA, Fla. — The Bethel Pilots (3-5) split the second day of the USSSA Space Coast Games with a loss to New College of Florida (2-4) and a big win over Hannibal-Lagrange in the nightcap.

VS NEW COLLEGE OF FLORIDA

The Mighty Banyans scored three runs out of the gate with an RBI double to center, an RBI single to left, and a ground out to the pitcher to take an early 3-0.

New College put up two more runs in the second after an RBI single to center and a fielder’s choice to increase the lead to 5-0, then roped in one last run in the third for a 6-0 advantage.

Kate Cooper broke up the shutout from an RBI double to left center, bringing in Maddy Shaw, but would end the game with a 6-1 loss.

Natalee McNeil falls to 0-3 after one inning of work, allowing three hits, three runs, and walked two.

VS HANNIBAL-LAGRANGE

The Pilots struck first with a single by Kate Cooper, which scored Morgan Blubaum. Then, Kate Cooper scored from an error by the catcher to take the initial 2-0 lead in the top of the first.

In the bottom of the frame, Hannibal-Lagrange roped a two-RBI single to tie the game, but Sonia Yoder answered with an RBI single to take the lead 3-2 in the top of the second.

Maddy Shaw traded places with Blubaum for an insurance run, followed by two more roped in by Cooper to make it a 5-2 game.

The Trojans answered in the bottom of the third with three runs to tie the game then Harmony Looney smacked in Grace Walker to regain the lead 6-5.

Bethel put up a huge six-run inning in the sixth and another six in the top of the seventh before the Trojans scored one last time to end the day 18-6, BU.

Hailey Allen improves her record to 1-1 after throwing a complete game, allowing eight hits on six runs, walking two, and striking out two.

The Pilots face the Siena Heights Saints at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Mar. 4, then the University of Fort Lauderdale at 12:15 p.m.
