Bethel WBB races past Goshen enroute to 14th win

MISHAWAKA, Ind. —The Bethel Women’s Basketball Team (14-7, 5-6) defeated the Goshen College Maple Leafs (3-18, 0-11) by a 40 point margin (86-46) on Wednesday evening in the Gates Gymnasium. 

Mariah Claywell led the Pilots in total points scored (21), while also leading the team from three (3-4). 

Isabella Nooe showcased 14 points for the Bethel offense, while Olivia Nickerson added 13. Nickerson shot 50% beyond the arc (3-6). 

Isabel Scales led the team in rebounds with eight (4-4), while contributing ten points and two steals.

With just over four minutes left on the clock, Goshen’s Carrie Hiler answered with a remarkable eleven points to push Goshen ahead 14-13. 

Mariah Claywell splashed her second triple of the quarter (0:06), assisted by Joslyn Marshall, to grant the Pilots a 16-14 lead at the conclusion of the first. 

The Pilots proceeded to double Goshen’s point total in the second, entering halftime up 34-23. 

Bethel’s offense proceeded to dominate the third quarter, with Olivia Nickerson leading the charge. Nickerson sank every attempted three, and the Pilots totaled four steals. 

Highlighting the Pilots’ final quarter of the night was Freshman Joslyn Marshall, who totaled six points with two shots from downtown (6:44, 5:12). 

Head Coach Scott Polsgrove shared, “Great team effort in the win tonight. We got scoring from 11 different players and contributions for everyone on both sides of the ball.” 

The Pilots will face the RV Taylor University Trojans on Saturday, Jan. 31 at Odle Arena.

Tip-off is set for 1 PM against the Crossroads League Opponent, who ranks fifth in the league (6-5) alongside Indiana Wesleyan (6-5). Bethel stands in seventh place (5-6), ahead of the Grace College Lancers (2-9).
