MISHAWAKA, Ind. — The Bethel Pilots Women’s Soccer team (3-1-0) fell to the Saint Xavier Cougars (2-0-0) 1-0 in regulation after battling a tough Cougar back line.

The Pilots had a couple of good pushes in the first half with two shots by Leena Thomas and Audrey Lerch, but there was no clear shot to attack the Cougar defense.

Saint Xavier’s Alex Jonaitis scored the first goal on a shot that took a fortunate roll after being touched by Pilot keeper Jael Schubert in the 37th minute.

In the second half, the Pilots put up six more shots with quickly closed opportunities by the Cougar back line. Giulia Franco nearly had a goal in the 84th minute on a free kick that hit the crossbar.

Lerch was close to a goal in the 87th minute off a corner kick by Franco, but the ball spun into the keeper’s hands for a save.
