Borom’s Brace Earns Win Number 150 For Goshen Women’s Soccer

Sophomore scores first two career goals 75 minutes apart
GOSHEN, Ind. — Taliah Borom scored her first career goal in the sixth minute and added another with 9:28 to play Saturday afternoon as the Goshen College women’s soccer team trounced Cleary 4-0 at the Goshen College Soccer Complex.
Brenda Tellez added her first career goal and Allison Ebersole her second for the Maple Leafs (1-1-1), who improve to 2-0 at home against Cleary (0-3) with an average margin of 3.5 scores.
After playing most of the first half with a 1-0 lead, Goshen saw its margin double 36 seconds before halftime as Tellez split two defenders and shot from the right side of the box. Ebersole extended the lead 12:31 after halftime on a fourth-chance opportunity after rebounds from shots by Borom, Londyn Feasel and Lena Charles.
Borom set the final margin when she dispossessed a defender in the midfield, dribbled past netminder Tatum Spears, and shot from the left side past the near post.
“I was pleased with our overall attitude today: we worked hard to press defensively and on offense we scored four goals out of work rate, effort and following through,” head coach Scott Gloden said. “We learned that we are capable of scoring goals, but staying engaged for 90 minutes is something we need to work on in spite of that. We still tune out for a moment sometimes and bad things can happen.
Saturday marked the 42nd time in 27 seasons (and first time since Aug. 23, 2016) that Goshen has scored four times in a match, but the win would have stood out in another way by any score: it was the 150th win in program history, which dates back to 1991.
Two dozen Maple Leafs saw action over the 90 minutes, including all three goalkeepers (though Kassandra Rodriguez checked in as an outfield player). Defender Priscila Floresand midfielder Lizeth Ochoa all made their collegiate debuts in the field, while goalkeeper Kadie Spoor checked in between the pipes for the first time with 14:09 to play.
Goshen outshot the Cougars 20-12, took nine of the match’s 13 corner kicks and put 10 shots on frame. Borom, Ebersole and Caitlin Hughey each took three shots—one shy of Carolina Villalobos Palacios for the team lead—and Borom put all three attempts on goal. In the department of quality over quantity, Tellez’s goal came on her only shot of the match and second of the season. Katie Baer and Spoor each made three saves as the team posted its first shutout of the fall.
“Katie Baer really controlled the 18-yard box and made a great save to keep the match 2-0 early in the second half,” Gloden said. “Offensively, Brenda Tellez was pure class.”
The Maple Leafs return home to play Calumet College of Saint Joseph at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, their first of two home matches this week as the men and women combine to play doubleheaders on both Wednesday and Saturday. The men’s team, carrying a two-match win streak of its own, hosts Rochester at 5 p.m. Wednesday to start the twinbill.
Goshen College is an affordable, nationally-ranked Christian liberal arts college in Northern Indiana known for leadership in intercultural and international education, sustainability and social justice.
The Maple Leafs compete in 13 varsity sports in the NAIA’s highly competitive Crossroads League, continuing a tradition of intercollegiate athletics that dates to 1956 and included women’s competition nearly a decade before Title IX.
