COLLEGE HOCKEY: NO. 3 MICHIGAN STATE AT NOTRE DAME
By JOHN FINERAN
Notre Dame hockey fans say goodbye to retiring coach Jeff Jackson and 11 seniors and graduate players as the Big Ten Conference regular season ends Friday and Saturday against visiting No. 3 Michigan State. Jackson, who earned two degrees at Michigan State, is one victory shy of 600 in his Hall of Fame coaching career as he prepares his 20th Notre Dame team for the upcoming Big Ten Tournament. The Spartans, smarting after falling from the No. 1 spots in the national polls and the Big Ten standings, can win their second straight conference regular-season title under coach Adam Nightingale with a good weekend.

QUOTING IRISH COACH JEFF JACKSON
(Last weekend at Wisconsin) “If you’re talking about the Saturday game (which Irish won 6-1)? These guys have gotten me excited several times throughout the year. The only problem is we haven’t been able to sustain it. It all depends on which team shows up, and I’m responsible for that. It’s been an enigma for me all season where we can look as bad as we did on Friday night (falling behind 4-0 before losing 7-3) and look as good as we looked on Saturday. That’s happening quite a bit this year. I can’t put my finger on why it is. You know the kids want to have success every time they play. But It is a maturity thing. We have a lot of young players in certain positions that are really important to our roster. They are the ones who have to navigate being prepared to play on a consistent level and a consistent basis. If we get that kind of performance this weekend … win or lose, if we can play well like we did this past weekend on Saturday, that’s more important to me going into the playoffs than anything.
(Michigan State) “They are going to be an angry group after (losing a shootout and losing) to Penn State. … I want us to prove that we can play with the big boys. We proved that at Minnesota when we beat them in overtime (4-3 at Minnesota Jan. 18 on Blake Biondi’s goal) … we should have beaten Boston University in Ireland (a 4-3 loss in Friendship Four championship game). We’ve played some of the top teams pretty tough throughout the year. The biggest thing for me is finding a way to beat an elite-level team in regulation, and finding a way to play our game, not their game. Every team brings a different identity, but Michigan State plays a similar game to Wisconsin – and they’re probably deeper in some positions. Michigan State is a typical Big Ten team – a lot of skill, a lot of grit and a lot of goaltending, all the tools to win a national title.”
THE RIVALRY: Michigan State leads 79-53-16 in rivalry which began with 3-1 Notre Dame victory on Jan. 18, 1922 at Aggie Rink in East Lansing. … Spartans riding a three-game winning streak in series that started with 4-0 victory Feb. 3, 2024 at Compton and continued with 8-3 and 4-3 victories at Munn Ice Arena Nov. 15-16 earlier this season. … In games played at Notre Dame, Irish hold 33-29-11 edge after their 4-1 triumph on Feb. 2, 2024. … This season’s recaps:
Michigan State 8, Notre Dame 3: On Friday, Nov. 15, Danny Nelson scored Notre Dame’s first two goals and Michael Mastrodomenico tied the game at 3-3 at 7:58 of the second period. … But MSU’s Charlie Stramel scored 13 seconds later and the Spartans never looked back, leading 5-3 after two and then adding three goals in the third period. … Karsen Dorwart, who had two goals, and Red Savage each had three-point nights and five other teammates notched two points each. … Michigan State outshot Notre Dame 41-30, including 19-6 in the third period. … Owen Say started for Notre Dame and had 25 saves before he was relieved at 4:40 in the third period by Jack Williams, who had eight saves to finish. … Trey Augustine got the win for the Spartans, making 27 saves, 14 of them in the second period.
Michigan State 4, Notre Dame 3: Blake Biondi, who had a three-point night for the Irish, scored power-play goal at 19:38.5 of the first period to tie the game at 1-1. … But the Spartans’ Matt Basgall stunned Notre Dame at 19:59.4 to give his team a 2-1 lead after the first period. … MSU’s Gavin O’Connell then scored at 1:14 of the second period for a 3-1 lead before Notre Dame’s Ian Murphy (12:52) and the Spartans’ Daniel Russell (18:02) made it 4-2 Michigan State after two periods. … The Irish got their final goal from Axel Kumlin at 18:30 with an extra attacker but couldn’t get the equalizer against Trey Augustine, who had 13 of his 28 saves in the final period. … Nicholas Kempf made 26 saves for the Irish.
LAST TIMES OUT: The Spartans, who were ranked No. 1 last week in both polls, fell out of first place in the Big Ten standings after managing just a 2-2 overtime tie (and losing a 2-1 shootout) Friday against visiting Penn State, which prevailed in Saturday’s game at Munn Ice Arena 3-2. … The Irish surrendered four goals in the first period and fell 7-3 to host Wisconsin on Friday but came back on Saturday to earn split of the weekend series with a 6-1 triumph. … Last weekend’s recaps:
Wisconsin 7, Notre Dame 3 (Feb. 21): The Badgers outshot the Irish 15-6 and scored three goals in a space of 5:25 of the first period before Irish coach Jeff Jackson mercifully replaced starting goaltender Owen Say for Nicholas Kempf at the 13:35 mark and then added another at 14:30 for a 4-0 first-lead. … Notre Dame cut lead in half on goals by Cole Knuble (0:27) and Danny Nelson (2:50) before two later goals made it 6-2 Wisconsin after two. … Justin Janicke’s power-play goal at 3:42 closed out the Irish scoring. … Badgers outshot the Irish 31-25 as winning goalie Tommy Scarfone totaled 22 saves, two less than what Say (8) and Kempf (16) totaled for Notre Dame.
Penn State 2, Michigan State 2 (OT) (Penn State won shootout, 2-1) (Feb. 21): The Nittany Lions led 1-0 after the first period on a goal by Dane Dowiak at 7:18 against MSU goaltender Trey Augustine, who had 31 saves. … But Tiernan Shoudy tied the game at 12:11 of the second period when he beat Penn State goaltender Arsenii Sergeev, who made 36 saves. … Penn State took a 2-1 lead to the dressing room, however, when Reese Laubach scored with 56 seconds left in the period. … But the Spartans once again tied the game when Maxim Štrbák’s goal at 8:36 tied the game at 2-2. … That remained the score for the rest of regulation and through the five-minute overtime period, with Sergeev making five saves to Augustine’s two. … In the shootout, Dylan Lugris gave Penn State a 1-0 lead before Isaac Howard tied it at 1-1. … Laubach then beat Augustine in the fourth round and Sergeev shut the door on MSU’s Tanner Kelly for the shootout victory.
Notre Dame 6, Wisconsin 1 (Feb. 22): The Irish came out with sticks blazing and scored two goals in each period to turn the tables on the Badgers, chasing Tommy Scarfone for backup William Gramme in the third period. … Junior left wing Niko Jovanovic scored his first career goal to get things started at the 4:50 mark in the first period and team captain Justin Janicke scored with 5.6 tickets left in the period for the 2-0 lead. … In the second period, goals by Cole Knuble (7:44) and Danny Nelson (16:44) sandwiched the Badgers’ only goal against starting goaltender Owen Say, who made 31 saves. … Ian Murphy raised the roof at 7:36 of the third period before Grand Silianoff scored at 15:16 as Wisconsin was skating an unsuccessful five-minute power play and had emptied its net for a sixth attacker.
Penn State 3, Michigan State 2 (Feb. 22): The Nittany Lions maintained the momentum of their Friday shootout win by stunning the Spartans and goaltender Trey Augustine with two early goals within a span of 41 seconds by Charlie Cerrato (0:59) and JJ Wiebusch (1:40). … Aiden Fink then scored at 1:27 of the second period and Penn State carried that 3-0 lead into the third period. … The Spartans got goals from Tommi Männistö (12:02) and Karsen Dorwart (19:50.8) but got no closer as Penn State goalie Arsenii Sergeev made 42 saves (15 in the second and 17 in the third) to double the total of Augustine.
THE LAST TIMES: Notre Dame won on a Friday night was Jan. 3, 2005 when the Irish tied Penn State 3-3 in overtime and then won a shootout 2-1 at the “Frozen Confines: Big Ten Hockey” outdoors game in Wrigley Field. … Notre Dame won a Friday night in regulation was a 5-2 victory over Harvard Nov. 29, 2024 in the opening game of the Friendship Four Tournament. … Notre Dame won a Friday night game at home was 3-2 over Wisconsin Nov. 1, 2004 on Cole Knuble’s overtime goal. … Last multi-game win streak: Three to start the season – 4-1 at St. Lawrence Oct. 11, 5-2 at Clarkson Oct. 12 and 4-1 over Alaska at Compton Oct. 18.
