Crossroads League Announces Athletes of the Week | April 29 – May 5

 

AVON, Ohio – The Crossroads League Athletes of the Week were announced on Monday, recognizing the top athletes from the week of April 29 through May 5. Sports Information Directors from the league nominate student-athletes for the award and vote on each week’s winners.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Matt Burleton, Marian

Burleton tossed a complete-game shutout and picked up 11 strikeouts in Marian’s CL Tournament victory over Spring Arbor. Burleton did not walk a hitter and allowed just six hits in the 1-0 victory.

 

Baseball Player of the Week
Steven Busby, Indiana Wesleyan

Busby homered twice and drove in four runs in three games for Indiana Wesleyan last week. Busby helped keep the Wildcats alive in the CL Tournament with a homer and two runs in IWU’s elimination game win over Huntington.

 

Softball Pitcher of the Week
Breena Smith, Marian

Smith struck out the first seven batters she faced in No. 2 Marian’s 1-0 win over SAU in the first game of the CL Tournament. Smith went the distance, fanning 10 and allowing just one walk and three hits in the victory.

 

Softball Player of the Week
Taylor Wilson, Taylor

Wilson keyed RV Taylor’s win over No. 13 Indiana Wesleyan in the CL Tournament with a solo home run and closed the week with three hits in six at bats, two runs and three RBI in TU’s two tournament wins.

 

Men’s Golfer of the Week
Lucas Beck, Taylor

Beck led No. 16 Taylor to a fourth-straight CL Championship by shooting a 73 and 72 at the meet to win the individual championship by two strokes over teammate Jeremy Ray.

 

Men’s Outdoor TF Field Athlete of the Week
Jordan Downs, Bethel

Downs was a one-man show for Bethel at the CL Championships, leading the Pilots to victory by claiming individual CL Championships in the long jump, pole vault and triple jump and claiming All-CL honors in the 200-meters and 4×100-meter relay.

 

Men’s Outdoor TF Track Athlete of the Week
Austin Peerman, Marian

Peerman won three events and hit two NAIA A standards for Marian at the Crossroads League Championships. Peerman claimed victory in the 100-meters, 200-meters and 4×100-meter relay, while recording top-10 marks in MU history in each race.

 

Women’s Outdoor TF Field Athlete of the Week
Paige Sutter, Indiana Wesleyan

Sutter posted a win in the shot put and took third in the discus to help Indiana Wesleyan secure the team championship at the CL meet. Sutter’s throw in the shot put was also good for an NAIA B mark.

 

Women’s Outdoor TF Track Athlete of the Week
Alex McFarland, Indiana Wesleyan

McFarland claimed a Crossroads League Championship in the 100-meters and 200-meters, while taking second in the 4×100-meter relay for team champion IWU.
