Reggie Glon is stepping down as the Head Coach of Marian Football. He will hand over the reins to 2002 Marian Alumnus Michael Davidson while still remaining on the coaching staff.
Davidson teaches in the Mathematics Department and has been involved in coaching Marian football for eight years, most recently serving as the Assistant Head Coach and the Defensive Coordinator.
Glon has been the Marian High School Head Coach for 24 years and he is the all-time leader in wins with a total of 165! He has accumulated five Sectional Championships, four Regional Titles and one NIC South Championship. He has had two undefeated regular seasons. With his win over St. Joseph’s High School this past season, he became the all-time leader of victories in the Holy War rivalry.
Glon has had a tremendous amount of on-field success, but it is important to note that he has also been a strong influence on and inspiration to his players off the field. Look no further than the sidelines on Friday night where many of his past players are working on his staff. Others make their way to Otolski Field to root on Coach Glon and the Knights. During the school day, it is a common occurrence to have former players visit Marian for a chat with Coach Glon. He has won the Moose Krause Award for his contributions to football and he will be inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in the spring of 2018.
When asked what Reggie has meant to him as a coach and mentor, Davidson had this to say.
“Reggie has been the second most influential male role model in my life, next to my father. He’s shown me what it means to be a good person and father off the field. Professionally, his work ethic and his example of how we mold young men into the leaders of tomorrow have made the most impact on me. I’m thankful that over the next few years he will be in a role in which I’ll be able to lean on him even further as a mentor. I can only hope to have half the impact on the game of football, Marian High School’s football program, and all of the players and coaches that he has had over the years.”
Davidson will become the 10th head coach in Marian’s history. He was a three-year starter at Marian when he won a Regional Championship as a sophomore in 1999. Two years later, he was named team captain during his senior campaign. While attending Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, he worked with the football team’s video staff before returning to Marian in 2006 to work as the varsity coach of the defensive backs and the head coach of the junior varsity team. During that four year stint he also became the Special Teams Coordinator before departing to become the running backs coach at Hudson Valley Community College in New York for one season. In June 2011, he worked as a Graduate Assistant and safeties coach at American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts until May of 2014 when he returned to Marian to teach in the Mathematics Department. At that time, he was named Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator. During the past four years, Davidson’s defense has been phenomenal in allowing only 14.1 points per game with seven shutouts. “Coach D” has been a coordinator for exactly 52 games and in 24 of those contests the Marian defense has held the opposition to fewer than 10 points.
Glon has confidence in his replacement.
“Mike Davidson is one of the best young defensive coordinators in the state. His defenses have been ranked in the top of 3A and in all of Indiana since his return to Marian in 2014. He has all of the qualities that make a successful head coach. He is an excellent role model, hard worker, leader, teacher in the classroom and on the field, and developer of young men, plus he is knowledgeable, organized and has a passion for the sport. Mike is a big part of why we have been able to win a NIC South Championship, three sectional championships in a row and two regional championships. He brings a wealth of college experience to the job, and he is ready to continue the tradition of playing for championships that Marian is accustomed to. I am honored to have been his coach and to be able to work with him for the next few years. I feel this move will help us to continue our past success during a flawless transition to the next generation of Marian Football.”
Both Davidson and Glon are looking forward to working with the 26 lettermen who will be returning for the 2018 season.
