DeWayne Shake to receive Distinguished Media Service Award

 

One of southwest Indiana’s most recognizable radio voices, DeWayne Shake of Shake Broadcasting, is the recipient of the 2023-24 IHSAA Distinguished Media Service Award for  District 3.

Shake’s contributions to education-based athletics will be recognized on Saturday when the Washington Hatchets host their county rival, the North Daviess Cougars in boys basketball at the Hatchet House.

IHSAA Commissioner Paul Neidig and Sports Information Director Jason Wille will make the presentation.

Shake is the owner of three radio stations under the Shake Broadcasting banner including WAMW-AM and FM, and WRZR-FM. His network of stations is the official home of the Washington Hatchets, Barr-Reeve Vikings, Loogootee Lions, Washington Catholic Cardinals, Shoals Jug Rox, and North Daviess Cougar football. His stations broadcast every Washington, Barr-Reeve and Loogootee boys and girls basketball games and he still calls the play-by-play for Hatchet soccer, football, basketball and baseball games.

In his 30th year of broadcasting, the Washington, Ind. native was one of the first to develop a local high school broadcasting program and helped to bring Washington High School and local government events on YouTube. He also has served as the media coordinator for 20 years for the
Montgomery Turkey Trot and got his start in broadcasting as a 12-year-old calling Washington Little League Games.

Shake is a 1996 graduate of Washington High School. He and his wife, Shelly, have a son, Cannon.

This is the 37th year the IHSAA has recognized outstanding members of the Indiana news media from each of its three legislative districts for excellence in the coverage of high school sports. District 3 covers 43 counties across southern Indiana.
