Edwards Named a Consensus 2nd-Team All-American

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue junior guard Carsen Edwards was named a second-team All-American by the Associated Press today, earning him consensus second-team All-America accolades.
Earlier this year, Edwards was named a third-team All-American by the Sporting News and second-team honors from the NABC and USBWA.
Edwards becomes Purdue’s first two-time All-American since Glenn Robinson in 1993 and 1994, while being named Purdue’s second consensus All-American in the last three years (Caleb Swanigan – 2017). Edwards is the 12th Purdue player in school history to be named a two-time All-American and just the sixth in the last 60 years.
Edwards turned in one of the top statistical seasons in Purdue history, in leading the Boilermakers to the Big Ten regular-season championship and a spot in the Elite Eight. He averaged 24.3 points per game, good for ninth nationally. His 874 points were the third most in the country and the third most in a season in school history. He shattered the Purdue and Big Ten record for most 3-pointers in a season with 135 (previous Purdue record was 100; previous Big Ten record was 120) and he became just the second player since the 1992-93 season with 850 points, 130 3-pointers, 100 assists and 40 steals (Davidson’s Stephen Curry twice) in the same season.
Edwards was at his best in the NCAA Tournament, averaging a jaw-dropping 34.8 points per game, scoring 42 points against both Villanova and Virginia. He set an NCAA Tournament record by making 28 3-pointers in the four games, including a school-record 10 triples against top-seeded Virginia in the South Regional finals. He became the first player since Davidson’s Stephen Curry in 2008 to be named the Most Outstanding Player of a regional from a losing team.
Edwards, who was named one of five finalists for the Jerry West Award which honors the nation’s top shooting guard, finished the season with a 24.3 scoring average, the most for a Big Ten player since Michigan State’s Shawn Respert in 1994 (25.6 PPG).
Edwards currently sits in seventh place on the Purdue career scoring list (1,920) and his 1,920 points are the most for a Big Ten player in league history through his junior season. Indiana’s Calbert Cheaney held the record for most points scored through his junior season at 1,828 points. Cheaney holds the record for career points scored by a Big Ten player at 2,613 points. Edwards needs 693 points to tie the record.
Edwards was a three-time Big Ten Player of the Week this season and was the Blue Ribbon Yearbook preseason National Player of the Year. He entered the year as one of just three returning All-Americans in college basketball (North Carolina’s Luke Maye and Virginia’s Kyle Guy).
