Fire Wrestling Opens Season 18th in NAIA Coaches’ Top 20

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The Southeastern University wrestling team checked in at No. 18 in the NAIA Wrestling Coaches’ Preseason Top 20.

This marks the first time the Fire have been ranked in a preseason wrestling poll.

Southeastern is one of six Mid-South Conference teams ranked, joining Cumberlands (5), Lindsey Wilson (8), Life (12), Campbellsville (14), and Brewton-Parker (17). Campbellsville, Lindsey Wilson, and Life will all visit The Fire Pit for dual matches this season.

Individually, the Fire have five wrestlers nationally ranked in the top 20 in their respective weight classes. Ethan Owen, who placed eighth at 133 last season starts the 2018-19 season ranked sixth at 141. Sophomore Jake Watters, a national qualifier as a freshman, starts the season ranked 15th at 149.

At 157, Dylan Chatterton placed seventh last season, and starts the year ranked fifth. Jason Davis is ranked 18th at 184, and newcomer Luis Peguero is 12th at 197.

The Fire will host their annual Red vs. Black intrasquad dual in The Fire Pit Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.
