Grace explodes for six goals

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – The home opener for No. 14 Grace’s women’s soccer team was a definitive success.

The Lady Lancers routed Saint Mary 6-0, scoring five goals before halftime at 1st Source Bank Field.

Dana Moriarty scored two goals, and Madison Tuma tallied a goal and two assists.

Alexis Larimore and Tuma teamed up to start Grace’s scoring in the first 20 minutes. In the 18th minute, Tuma assisted Larimore for the game’s first goal with a sliding effort past the goalkeeper.

Three minutes later, Larimore returned the favor. Tuma finished off a quick attack with a left-footed effort into the net to give Grace a 2-0 lead.

Moriarty added Grace’s third goal in the 25th minute when she placed a shot inside the left goalpost.

The Lady Lancers, who used their bench extensively in both halves, added two more goals before halftime.

In the 36th minute, Sam Vondersaar recorded her first collegiate goal. Ashley VandenBoom split the Flames’ defense with a pass in the penalty box. Vondersaar collected the pass, held off the defensive pressure and poked in her goal from close range.

Moriarty added her second goal of the half in the 42nd minute, finishing a cross from Sarah Casteel.

Grace entered halftime with a commanding 5-0 lead. The Lady Lancers owned an 8-1 edge in shots and had the only two corner kicks of the half.

Grace substituted liberally in the second half, using 13 subs overall in the contest.

The Lady Lancers tacked on their sixth and final goal seven minutes into the second half. Lea Moessinger and Tuma combined for a quick combination, setting up Tori Calizo in the box. Calizo shielded a strong challenge by a Flame defender and slotted her shot past the goalkeeper for the final 6-0 margin of victory. It marked Calizo’s first career goal.

The Lady Lancers will travel to Pittsburgh, Pa., next Saturday for a contest at Point Park. Grace’s next home outing will be a Top 25 clash against No. 6 Southeastern on Sept. 4.
