Hawkeyes Fall to No. 5 Wisconsin
CORALVILLE, Iowa – University of Iowa volleyball fell to No. 5 Wisconsin, 3-0, Friday night in Xtream Arena.
The Hawkeyes were led by junior Audrey Black who hit at a clip of .412 and senior Amiya Jones who led the team with 10 kills. Setters Lily Tessier and Bailey Ortega recorded 13 and 12 assists respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 (Wisconsin, 27-25): Both teams came out swinging. Wisconsin was able to get four straight points to take the 6-3 lead. Back-to-back Hawkeye kills brought the team within one with the score at 6-5. The set went back-and-forth, with Iowa able to keep it close. A kill from sophomore Michelle Urquhart cut the Badger lead to one. Jones was able to tie it at 13 with a back-to-back kill and block. An ace from Jones tied the set again at 15 and another tie at 18 after a kill from Urquhart. Iowa took their first timeout, down two, with the score at 20-18. The Hawkeyes forced the Badgers to take a timeout after three straight points to take the 23-22 lead. A kill form Jones brought Iowa to set point. A successful challenge for the Hawkeyes got them to another set point, 25-24. Wisconsin was able to get three straight to close out the first set victory.
SET 2 (Wisconsin, 25-15): It was a back-and-forth affair to open the second set. The Badgers went on a 4-0 run to take a 7-4 lead. After another three straight Wisconsin points, Iowa took their first timeout down five, 11-6. The two teams were exchanging points, but kills from junior Delaney McSweeney and Urquhart cut the deficit to four. Another kill off the hand of Urquhart got the score to 14-10 Wisconsin. The Badgers extended their lead to eight as Iowa took their second timeout of the set. The Hawkeyes were able to get a few points here and there, but Wisconsin had control of the set until the end.
SET 3 (Wisconsin, 25-19): The third set opened evenly matched between the two teams. The Badgers took the lead, 7-5, after a 3-0 run. Iowa answered back with three straight of their own to take the 8-7 lead. Points were getting exchanged in pairs of two as Wisconsin took the 11-10 lead. Another 3-0 run for the Badgers forced the Hawkeyes to take a timeout. Iowa quicky took their second timeout with Wisconsin’s lead at 18-13. It was back-and-forth as the Badgers were able to maintain their lead, 22-17. Wisconsin was able to secure the match on a kill.

“We served twice to win in the first set and one of those serves went out. That is a tough one, when you have a ranked opponent at home you really want to get the first set to keep the pressure on them. We battled and the effort was there on defense, and we didn’t give up. We have to learn and improve going into tomorrow.”
