Holmes Breaks Indiana Women’s Basketball Scoring Record In Win Over Purdue

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.  – Graduate student forward Mackenzie Holmes broke Indiana women’s basketball’s all-time scoring record as she helped lead her team to a 95-62 win over Purdue on Sunday afternoon inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.

KEY MOMENTS

  • Holmes started the game off with the IU (20-3, 11-2 B1G) first bucket just 20 seconds in as the lead grew to as many as five on a 3-pointer from senior guard Sara Scalia. Purdue (10-13, 3-9 B1G) pulled within one, 13-12, with a pair at the line as Scalia retaliated with a floater in the lane with 3:03 remaining. A deep 3-pointer from senior guard Chloe Moore-McNeil helped set up Indiana with a 18-14 lead after one.
  • The lead was as many as 12 in the second quarter as sophomore guard Lexus Bargesser got to the hoop with 5:12 remaining. The Boilermakers hit back-to-back shots to cut the lead down to six as Scalia scored the next five IU points to make it a 37-28 lead with 2:09 to go before the break.
  • Indiana’s defense would hold Purdue to just one field goal in the final 3:58 as it took a 41-30 lead at half. It was all IU in the third quarter, grinding out 31 points while shooting 68.8 percent from the floor as Moore-McNeil tallied 12 of her 22 points in the frame.
  • Going into the fourth quarter with 11 points, the Hoosiers were able to find Holmes in the final 10 minutes as she moved her name up to the No. 1 spot on the all-time scorer’s list. She scored six points in the fourth quarter, notching the record on a pass from sophomore guard Yarden Garzon with 5:15 left in the game.
  • The Hoosiers cruised the rest of the way, posting a 33-point win – its largest in the series since the two programs first met in a 45-point victory in 1975.

NOTABLE

  • Holmes takes over sole possession of first place in scoring in the all-time Indiana women’s basketball record book. She finished the night with 17 points for a career total of 2,365 points – passing Tyra Buss’ 2,364 points she amassed from 2014-18.
  • The win also pushed the Hoosiers season win total to 20, marking its ninth-straight 20-win season and its 15th overall in program history.
  • IU’s 33-point win is the second largest in the program’s history in the series with the Boilermakers. Indiana won the first ever meeting between the two teams on Feb. 28, 1975 by a score of 98-53. The Hoosiers also won by 30 points in an 84-54 victory on Feb. 29, 1980.
  • Going 5-5 from behind the arc, Moore-McNeil scored a career-high 22 points in the Hoosier win. She also ended with five rebounds and five assists.
  • Scalia added four 3-pointers, pushing her season total to 75 and just four away from breaking the single season 3-pointer made record set by Amanda Cahill in 2017-18 (78).
  • Bargesser led the team in rebounds, pulling nine down off the glass as the Hoosiers won the battle on the glass, 32-21. The Grass Lake, Mich. native also contributed 12 points and three assists in the victory.
  • As a team, IU improved to 13-0 when shooting 50 percent or better as it went 59 percent from the floor. It also hit 13 3-pointers in the win, shooting 61.9 percent from beyond-the-arc. It’s the third time this season that IU has shot 60 percent or better from long range (65.2 percent at Purdue, 60.9 percent at Nebraska).
  • Freshman guard Julianna LaMendola hit a career-high in scoring, putting up eight points for the Hoosier as the IU bench accounted for 21 points in the effort.

QUOTABLE

Indiana head coach Teri Moren

“Oh wow, first of all, the crowd was amazing as we knew they would be on a Sunday (with) the great rivalry with Purdue and Indiana. It was such a special day that Mack(enzie Holmes) could become our all-time leading scorer here at home in front of her fans and against our arch rival as well, but she had help. I thought there was a lot of good basketball out there today. I thought Chloe (Moore-McNeil) was really feeling it and Sara (Scalia) was, once again, really good. I thought Lexi (Bargesser) kept the foot on the pedal in transition I’m really proud and I’m so happy for Mack. I think Mack is relieved that this is over and now it’s one less thing she has to worry about. Not that Mack was worried about it. Mack is never worried about her own accolades. It’s always been about the team for Mackenzie, and on a day like today where she could get it in front of a crowd of a little over 13,000, that’s really special and I’m sure something that she will always remember.”
