Illini Volleyball Recruiting Class Earns No. 20 Ranking

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The 2020 Illinois volleyball recruiting class has been ranked No. 20 in the country as rated by PrepVolleyball.com. The three-member class includes Maddie Whittington (Stillwater, Minn.), Raina Terry (Marengo, Ohio) and Sophie Gregus (Naperville, Illinois).

“This is a great class for us that will continue to add to the size and strength associated with Illinois volleyball,” said head coach Chris Tamas. “All three have a well-rounded game and they also have a great passion for the game. We are excited to add them to the team.”

PrepVolleyball.com‘s comments on the Fighting Illini’s 2020 recruiting class:
Illinois’ incoming trio complements its evolving team. They each bring a competitive mindset, a fierce internal drive, and athletic ability. Gregus has Illini blood as her father and uncle played football for the Orange and Blue. She plays with two quality Chicago-area programs in Benet Academy and Adversity and has proven to be a great all-around player. With a great arm and vision, Terry, Senior Ace No. 89, is a 17 Open AAU National champion and USAV runner-up with Mintonette. Her competitive mindset stands out to coach Chris Tamas. He said, “Knowing how to play in big moments is an important skill to have and Raina already has vast experience in big matches.” One panelist said about Whittington, “Good arm, moves really well, rhythm on a slide and hits it with range – rare for that height!” The No. 52 Ace overcame an injury that would have slowed down others, proving her toughness. “Maddie’s drive and passion to learn and grow through the sport has impressed me the most,” said Tamas.
