Twelve Academic All-Big Ten students highlight Preseason Honors List
ROSEMONT, Ill. — Indiana was selected by the Big Ten men’s soccer coaches to pace the nine league teams in the 2019 season, announced by the Conference on Tuesday.
In 2018, Indiana (20-3-1, 8-0-0 Big Ten) earned the Big Ten Championship and Big Ten Tournament crown, along with making a run to the NCAA College Cup.
Defending NCAA champion Maryland was voted to finish second in the league poll, with ranked Michigan in third. 2018 College Cup qualifier Michigan State and Wisconsin were selected fourth and fifth in the preseason poll, respectively.
The preseason honors list includes the 2018 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year Jack Hallahan of Michigan, Midfielder of the Year Giuseppe Barone of Michigan State and Freshman of the Year Jack Maher of Indiana. The list also includes three All-Big Ten first-team selections, three All-Big Ten second-team picks and four all-freshman team honorees from 2018.
The 2019 preseason honors list features five Big Ten Distinguished Scholars – Michigan’s Umar Farouk Osman, Michigan State’s Michael Pimlott, Northwestern’s Ty Seager, Penn State’s Brandon Hackenberg and Wisconsin’s Noah Leibold. Twelve of the students on the honors list were named 2018-19 Academic All-Big Ten.
The 2019 season begins on Aug. 29 with multiple Big Ten teams taking to the pitch.
