POSTGAME NOTES

Iowa (1-0) defeated Wyoming (0-1), 24-3, Saturday at Kinnick Stadium. The Hawkeyes scored the final 24 points of the game to win for the 16th time in 19 season openers under Kirk Ferentz.

 

The Hawkeyes held Wyoming to three points, the Cowboys lowest point total since a 38-3 loss to San Diego State on Nov. 14, 2015.

 

INDIVIDUAL SUPERLATIVES

QB Nate Stanley is the 14th quarterback to start a game under Kirk Ferentz. Those 14 quarterbacks are 9-5 in their first career starts. Winners include Randy Reiners, Brand Banks, Nathan Chandler, Drew Tate, Jason Manson, Jake Christiansen, Ricky Stanzi, C.J. Beathard, and Nate Stanley. Those who lost their first start include Kyle McCann, Scott Mullen, Jon Beutjer, James Vandenberg, and Jake Rudock.

 

QB Nate Stanley threw three touchdowns in his first career start. The last quarterback to throw three touchdowns in his first career start was Ricky Stanzi (3, vs. Florida Atlantic in 2008). Since, 1999, the only other quarterback to throw three or more touchdowns in his first career start under Ferentz was Jon Beutjer (4, at Indiana in 2000).

 

RB Akrum Wadley rushed 24 times for 116 yards. Wadley has 10 career 100-yard rushing games.

 

C Keegan Render made his first career start at center. He had previously started six games at left guard and one game at right guard. Iowa’s starting offensive line included LT Alaric Jackson, LG Ross Reynolds, C Render, RG, Sean Welsh, and RT Ike Boettger.

 

TE Noah Fant caught a career-best two touchdown passes (2, 27).

 

WR Nick Easley had a team-high four receptions, a team-high 77 yards, and a touchdown (45) in his Iowa debut.

 

LB Ben Niemann had a career-high 13 tackles. LB Josey Jewell recorded a game-high 14 tackles. Bo Bower (11) and Miles Taylor (8) both tied their career highs.

 

Iowa intercepted Wyoming QB Josh Allen two times. CB Josh Jackson and DT Brady Rieff both recorded their first career interceptions.

 

MISCELLANEOUS

Iowa used nine first-time starters, six on offense and three on defense.

Offense: QB Nate Stanley, RB James Butler, LT Alaric Jackson, LG Ross Reynolds, TE J.J. Hockenson, TE Noah Fant.

Defense: DL Cedrick Lattimore, FS Jake Gervase, CB Michael Ojemudia.

 

Iowa lost three fumbles today. The Hawkeyes lost two fumbles in all of 2016, tying Nevada for the NCAA lead.

 

Wyoming won the toss and deferred to the second half. In 19 seasons as Iowa’s head coach, Kirk Ferentz and the Hawkeyes have opened the game on offense in 178-of-228 games (108-70). Iowa has started the game on defense 50 times (28-22).

 

Six true freshmen played today:  WR Ihmir Smith-Marsette, DB Matt Hankins, DB Geno Stone, RB Ivory Kelly-Martin, DB Noah Clayberg, and DL A.J. Epenesa
