Jevert surpasses 400 career kills, RedHawks fall in Michigan
ADRIAN, Mich. – Another milestone was passed Saturday as Karly Jevert has smacked down over 400 kills during her illustrious career with the Indiana University Northwest volleyball team.
The RedHawks, however, fell in four (23-25, 25-21, 21-25, 22-25) to Midway and four (25-17, 14-25, 20-25, 20-25) against Spring Arbor Saturday afternoon. IUN returns to action Friday at the Liz Lykowski Tournament hosted by Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne.
MATCH ONE
Julianna Picicco laid down an ace to give IUN a two-point lead, and a few minutes later the RedHawks cushion was at 20-17 after back-to-back Midway attack errors. In the closing moments of the match, the teams traded points, but the Eagles closed the opening set by scoring three of the four final points.
In second stanza play a pair of aces by Picicco gave the RedHawks a 19-14 advantage and following an Erica Packwood kill the lead went to 21-15. Midway went on a short run, but IUN was able to close the frame out on a Julianna Kisel kill.
During the third set Midway led throughout, but the RedHawks chopped a deficit of six down to three after an unforced error and a Packwood kill. IUN though could not draw any closer as it was outscored 4-3 over the final stretch.
Trying to force a fifth set, the RedHawks got out to a 3-0 lead after kills by Kaelan Murphy and a Chloe Roberts ace. The lead would get to 7-1 before Midway used a run to take a 17-14 lead. IUN tied the match at 18 but could regain the edge over the final points of the match.
MATCH TWO
The opening bout was a back-and-forth battle, but a Packwood kill, and her three straight aces kick started the RedHawk offense. The lead would balloon to eight (21-13) after kills by Josephine Mulligan and Murphy, end IUN held the advantage for the remainder of the contest.
Following a tough second set, IUN rebounded in the third holding a 10-7 lead, but after cold stretch SAU went up seven (22-15). The RedHawks could only get within four after another Murphy kill as the Cougars were able to hold on.
Down 12-7, IUN got a pair of kills from Murphy to get the deficit down to one (17-16), but a 6-1 SAU run held off the RedHawks. IUN, however, did muster another short run, but could not force a fifth game.
