ABIDJAN, COTE D’IVOIRE- Southeastern University women’s soccer forward Uchenna Kanu helped lead her home country to a memorable championship win. Kanu netted the equalizer for the Nigeria National Team against Ivory Coast in the West Africa Football Union Women’s Cup Final, where Nigeria eventually won the title in penalty kicks 5-4.
Kanu’s goal came with one second remaining in the 95th minute to level the match 1-1 between Nigeria and Ivory Coast.
The goal was the Abia, Nigeria native’s 10th of the tournament. Kanu received the Golden Boot Award for being the tournament’s top scorer.
Nigeria earned a place in the final after coming out on top of another contest that went to penalties (4-2) against Ghana in the semifinal.
The WAFU Cup victory is Nigeria’s 12th in the last 14 completions of the tournament.
Kanu and the rest of the national team will now travel to Austria for a two-week camp.
Following the programming, Nigeria head coach Thomas Dennerby is expected to name his final list of 23 players for the World Cup, which begins June 8.
