When it comes time to praise Notre Dame goaltender Nicholas Kempf, first-year hockey coach Brock Sheahan has been his biggest fan most of this long season.
Saturday night as Notre Dame made its way back home following its 2-2 tie and 1-0 shootout victory at Bowling Green, Sheahan was quick and to the point in praising his sophomore from Morton Grove, Ill.
“Nick played at a very high level tonight,” said Sheahan after Kempf made a career-high 48 saves – 39 in regulation and nine more in overtime – and then stopped six of the eight shots directed his way during the eight-round shootout that followed, a couple of them after he suffered a cut on his right hand from a player’s skate.
“Bowling Green is a shot-volume team, especially on the power play,” Sheahan added, “and Nick handled that challenge tonight.”
Did he ever. Though 5-16-3 with one shutout this season, Kempf lowered his goals-against average to 3.54 and saw his saves percentage improve to .896 against coach Dennis Williams’ Falcons (14-6-6), one of four teams contending for the CCHA regular-season title and also in the hunt for an NCAA at-large tournament bid. Kempf’s counterpart, freshman Jacob Steinman, made just 25 saves as Bowling Green outshot Notre Dame 50-27.
Trailing 1-0 after Bowling Green’s Jeremie Minville scored at 4:24 of the first period, Notre Dame got second-period goals from Evan Werner (at 1:01 on a power play) and Brennan Ali (at 5:18) before surrendering a power-play goal to Brayden Crampton with 11.4 seconds remaining in the period. The Irish were in the midst of killing off a five-minute major and game misconduct handed down to Cole Brown for a hit from behind.
Kempf stopped four shots in the first 52 seconds of a scoreless third period as Bowling Green outshot the Irish 15-10 in those 20 minutes and then had a 9-1 shot advantage in the overtime.
Irish senior defenseman Axel Kumlin beat Steinman to his stick side to begin the eighth round of the shootout and that shot held up as Kempf shut the door on Bowling Green’s Tyler Hotson, stunning the sellout crowd of more than 5,000 at the Slater Family Ice Arena and giving each team an overtime shootout win this weekend. Bowling Green won its shootout 1-0 Friday after the teams battled to a 3-3 tie in South Bend.
“This just shows us we’re doing the right things during the week,” Kempf said. “During that stretch when we weren’t getting the results, it was pretty easy to question what we were doing. Now that we’ve had the results come our way, it’s easy to look at things and say this is what we should be doing.”
Kempf will get no argument from his coach. “I’m really proud of our group’s effort tonight in a tough environment,” Sheahan said. “It is nice to see progress in our game, and I think this entire weekend is something we can build on moving forward.”
If the bus ride over to Bowling Green Friday night felt like a long one, the same 165 miles back Saturday evening probably went rather quickly. Notre Dame (5-18-3) is now unbeaten in three games heading into its Big Ten series next weekend at Wisconsin, which has lost six straight league games in its last three series against No. 2 Michigan State, No. 5 Penn State and at fifth-place Minnesota.
Kempf was on top of his game from the start, turning aside 12 of the 13 shots directed at him by the Falcons in the first period. The only one which eluded the Irish sophomore netminder was made by Minville, who directed a shot by Breck McKinley into the goal at 4:23.
Things looked bleak 12 seconds later when Notre Dame’s Will Belle took an interference penalty, and even bleaker still when Belle was joined in the penalty box by Paul Fischer after his cross check at 5:45. But Kempf made a pair of saves as the Irish killed the 5-on-3 power play and then the 5-on-4 remaining one as well.
At one point, the Falcons had a 12-2 edge in shots before Notre Dame’s Danny Nelson and Bowling Green’s Quinn Emerson went to the box for coincidental cross checking penalties at 16:43. Kempf and the Irish then survived a scare when Bowling Green defenseman Jackson Niedermayer hit the pipe at 17:48.
Notre Dame got an early power-play opportunity and capitalized at 1:01 of the second period when Werner blasted his 11th goal of the season past Steinman from the faceoff circle after taking a feed from Danny Nelson. Cole Knuble also got an assist.
The Irish then took the lead at 5:18 when Brennan Ali somehow got to a loose puck after center Sutter Muzzatti’s shot escaped Steinman.
But once again, Notre Dame got itself in trouble with a major penalty. Brown hit a player from behind and was banished from the game at 16:56. The Irish almost escaped the second period before Crampton tied the game with 11.4 seconds remaining. After Kempf’s early heroics in the third period, the Irish ended regulation by outshooting the Falcons 5-1 in the final 5:42 of the period.
