Knight Breaks IIHF Women’s Hockey Worlds Assist Record As U.S. Beats Switzerland, 5-0

“It’s an honor to coach this team and it’s an honor to coach Hilary Knight,” said John Wroblewski (Nennah, Wis.), head coach of the 2025 U.S. Women’s National Team. “Moments like tonight remind us how much of an impact she’s had on this team and this game. The win is just the cherry on top.”

The U.S. got the first power play opportunity of the game with 9:23 remaining in the first and capitalized just 46 seconds later. Tessa Janecke (Warren, Ill./Penn State University) banked home a rebound off a shot from Alex Carpenter (North Reading, Mass./New York Sirens) to put Team USA up 1-0. Knight picked up an assist on the play as well.

Just 1:14 later, Kendall Coyne Schofield (Palos Heights, Ill./Minnesota Frost) doubled the U.S. lead cleaning up a wide-open rebound off a Kelly Pannek (Plymouth, Minn./Minnesota Frost) shot from the faceoff dot. The goal ties Coyne Schofield with Cammi Granato for second-most Women’s Worlds points in U.S. history (78).

Janecke picked up her second of the game, from Knight and Carpenter, with 4:55 remaining in the opening period to put the U.S. up 3-0 heading into the first intermission. Knight’s assist, her second of the game, marked her 49th career Women’s World Championship assist, tying the all-tie Women’s Worlds assist record.

With just one second remaining in the second, Caroline Harvey (Salem, N.H./University of Wisconsin) ripped a shot from the point to open a 4-0 lead. Knight recorded an assist on the goal, her third of the game and 50th of her career, breaking the IIHF Women’s World Championship all-time assist record.

The final tally came from Coyne Schofield with 1:19 left in the third putting home a shot on the doorstep. The goal, her 79th all-time Women’s Worlds point, moves her into sole possession of second in the U.S. record book.

Gwyneth Philips (Athens, Ohio/Ottawa Charge) and Ava McNaughton (Seven Fields, Pa./University of Wisconsin) combined to make six saves in net.

Next up, the U.S. will face Germany in the quarterfinal round on Thursday (April 17). Puck drop is set for 1:30 p.m. CET (7:30 a.m. ET) and can be viewed live on NHL Network.
