Lady Lancers complete season sweep of Pilots

MISHAWAKA, Ind. – Grace’s volleyball team produced a definitive sweep of Bethel on the road Friday.

The Lady Lancers beat Bethel 3-0 in both regular season matchups, winning 25-20, 25-22 and 25-10 in Friday’s match.

Grace secured a top-four finish in the Crossroads League with Friday’s sweep. The Lady Lancers (19-13, 11-5 CL), currently in fourth place, could jump into third depending on the outcome of the final two matches of the year.

Offensively, Grace was practically unstoppable against Bethel on Friday. The Lady Lancers pounded out 48 kills on a .352 percentage compared to 37 kills at a .202 clip by the Pilots (10-18, 5-11 CL).

In the opening set, Grace scored six unanswered points to take an early lead. The Lady Lancers never surrendered that advantage en route to a five-point win.

Bethel looked to even up the match with a 10-5 lead in the second set. But Grace responded by winning six of the next seven points to regain the lead.

Grace’s seniors carried the team down the stretch in the second game. Marta Bleed, Kelsee Zuidema and Caylie Teel had Grace’s final six points to win 25-22; each senior had two kills during that stretch.

The Pilots had little left in the third set. A 9-0 run by Grace sank the Pilots’ chances, and the Lady Lancers won handily 25-10.

Teel tallied a double-double with 15 kills and 13 digs, and Zuidema had 12 kills on a .435 percentage with eight digs.

Alexa Hill passed out 38 assists with 11 digs and two block assists, and Bleed added nine kills.

Makaela Lochmueller had 6 kills, 2 solo blocks and 2 block assists, Gina Novotny added 14 digs, and Hanna Leach had four kills on four attempts.

The Lady Lancers end the week on the road Saturday at Indiana Wesleyan at 3 p.m.
