Junior won twice as Goshen made run to Crossroads League semifinals

Junior men’s tennis player Juan Miguel Ciudad is the Maple Leaf Athlete of the Week for the week ending October 7.

A native of Valencia, Spain, Ciudad went 2-2 last week as the Maple Leafs reached the semifinals of the Crossroads League men’s tennis tournament, topping Grace 6-3 before losing 5-1 to eventual champion Marian.

He went 1-1 at both no. 2 singles and no. 2 doubles last week, winning a three-setter against Grace and coming back to force a third set against Marian before losing 6-3 on the singles side. In doubles, he teamed with Kartikeya Sharma to earn the Maple Leafs’ lone win of the match at Marian after losing to Grace in the first match of the week.

Ciudad went 8-1 in singles for the second consecutive conference season and helped the Maple Leafs to a 10-3 record. GC finished the year third in the Crossroads League with a 7-2 mark.

While Goshen’s conference schedule ended Thursday with the postseason loss, the Maple Leafs have one more fall match, a visit to Lawrence Tech at 4:30 p.m. Friday. Any spring matches will be announced in due course.

The Maple Leaf Athlete of the Week is selected each week by a panel of Goshen College administrators, coaches, media and faculty.
