MATT’S MATCHUPS 2021-22 HOOPS – STATE FINALS

Lafayette Central Catholic’s upset of top-ranked Gary 21st Century in the Class 1A northern semistate was my lone setback as I went 7-1 (88 percent) last week. Going into the final week, my overall mark is now 336-96, which leaves me at 78 percent for the season. All times are eastern.

CLASS 1A

North Daviess (26-3) vs. Lafayette Central Catholic (20-9) (10:30 a.m.): Jaylen Mullen chipped in 16 points for the No. 2 Cougars in their 60-47 win over No. 10 Jac-Cen-Del. Clark Barrett recorded 16 points in the Knights’ 68-65 overtime triumph over No. 1 Gary 21st Century. Matt’s pick: North Daviess 57, Lafayette Central Catholic 54.

CLASS 2A

Providence (20-6) vs. Central Noble (28-2) (12:45 p.m.): Max Beatty racked up 15 points in the Pioneers’ 41-33 upset of No. 9 Eastern Hancock. Conner Lemmon’s 11 points helped the No. 3 Cougars in their 54-48 win over No. 6 Carroll (Flora). Matt’s pick: Central Noble 51, Providence 48.

CLASS 3A

Beech Grove (21-6) vs. Marian (24-3) (6 p.m.): Jeremiah Alexander registered 13 points for the Hornets in their 62-58 overtime triumph against No. 4 Sullivan. Deaglan Sullivan’s 24 points lifted the No. 2 Knights to a 74-63 win over No. 8 Leo. Matt’s pick: Marian 65, Beech Grove 61.

CLASS 4A

Indianapolis Cathedral (24-6) vs. Chesterton (29-0) (8:15 p.m.): The No. 6 Fighting Irish slipped past top-ranked Chesterton, 63-60, during the 1999-2000 campaign. Jaron Tibbs tallied 15 points in Cathedral’s 61-55 win over Bloomington North. Chris Mullen added five points in the Trojans’ 42-40 win over Kokomo. Matt’s pick: Cathedral 60, Chesterton 56.
